I would highly suggest you to read the release notes of the Node or Drive firmware package, as they would include wording on the impact of the operation.  For example for Node Firmware 9.0.1 Release Note, it has the following section:

Upgrade considerations

Before you begin a firmware upgrade, it is important to be aware of the impact the upgrade process will have on cluster operations.  A firmware update takes approximately 10 minutes per node. Each node is updated individually, and is automatically restarted when the update is complete.  A cluster-wide firmware update has the potential to be disruptive for a significant period

of time if the cluster includes many nodes.

You can find all the release notes from the following link:

What are some of the potential impacts to an enterprise when performing node and drive firmware updates?

Q1. any plans to incorporate drive firmware into OneFS upgrade so i don't have two reboot each node twice ?

Q2. we have had multiple upgrades where during OneFS upgrade a node is refusing to give up its up address (IP pool with dynamic allocation) and refuses to shutdown. We end up putting the botton on the back of the node to cycle it in the mean time IP that belong to that node are not available. (again not static pool by dynamic).

I am not certain there is any plan to incorporate firmware upgrade into the OneFS upgrade process.  The firmware upgrade process is a delicate process, so it is best to be carried out separate from other delicate operations such as OneFS upgrade.  I will check to see if there is any future plan for such incorporation and let you know when I find out more.

For the issue of not able to reboot node during upgrade, a case should be filed with Global Service so proper action can be taken to address the problem.  Thank you for bring this to our attention.  Ivan Tang

i had tickets open for the issue, which happen 4 times by the way. In the end 2 nodes were replaced as these were the two that always locked up. We are doing firmware upgrade in a month so we'll see if the issue was truly resolved.

Out of family upgrades are not going to require complete outage anytime soon ?

Regarding out of family upgrades: I do know that this is something we are looking at for future releases. I do not have any ETA for this as of yet.

I completely understand, this would definitely be a big win for Isilon and our customers, unfortunately I have limited visibility to product development.

From what I understand it will start with OneFS 7.1.x to the 7.2.x release and will not apply to anything pre 7.1, I must stress that there is nothing official from EMC Isilon and this is definitely subject to change.
