Ask the Expert: All about Data Replication Recovery and Protection with Recoverpoint (SE)

Welcome to the EMC Support Community Ask the Expert conversation. EMC RecoverPoint (SE) provides continuous data protection with multiple recovery points to restore applications instantly to a specific point in time.  Join in the discussion starting on the 9th of December to learn more about how customers are leveraging RecoverPoint (SE) to protect applications with bidirectional synchronous and asynchronous replication with digital video recorder (DVR)-like recovery in physical, virtual, and cloud infrastructures.  Customers can realize bandwidth reduction, minimizing network utilization with unique bandwidth compression and deduplication, significantly reducing replicated data over the network.  And, learn how you too can streamline disaster recovery testing of your application environment while production replication continues unaffected.

Your Hosts:

Kicking off the discussion with a little general information, and some links that provide further detial on RecoverPoint(SE).

Customers are using RecoverPoint (SE) not only to replicate their critical as well as tertiary data to another location to protect their business from data loss, but they’re leveraging RP (SE) to test their Disaster / Recovery Play book.  It’s one thing to write a DR playbook, it’s another to actually test it out.  Going a step further, EMC’s integration with VMware SRM (Site Recovery Manager) enables customers to failover (automatically) as well as failback (automatically).  It would be great to hear some testimonials from those who’ve put RecoverPoint and SRM into action.

Some recent news to be excited about; EMC released RecoverPoint (SE) as virtual appliances for those running vSphere 5.0 and higher (some minor hardware requirements to be aware of).  This enables customers to further consolidate; garnering the most of their investment in a virtualized datacenter.  Customers who purchase the local protection suite would be privy to a vRPA for CDP (Continuous Data Protection), and if customers are replicating array-to-array for their VNX’s, they can download the vRPA’s for CRR (Continuous Remote Replication).

There is a lot of great information located on the Virtual Geek website in regards to the new virtual appliances, vRPA.  For more detail on the requirements to operate the vRPA's click here.

Interesting fact:

The latest RecoverPoint 4.0 enhancements enable administrators to select the appropriate image (replicated data) to mount-to when combining their RecoverPoint solution with VMware’s SRM (Site Recovery Manager).

EMC improved the API’s for SRM providing administrators granular control over which image is selected when SRM is ready to “spin up” the secondary site. Prior to this enhancement, SRM would simply pick the latest image available; in other words whatever data was most recently received at the DR site. This meant the possibility of mounting a PIT that administrators would have rather not have had selected.  With the ability to choose a specific image (PIT), or even an application consistent PIT (Book Mark) provides less aggravation in having to manually massage data sets to get to the appropriate PIT.  Application consistency is available to those customers whom deploy RecoverPoint in tandem with AppSync or Replication Manager.

AppSync and Replication Manager are responsible for flushing host buffers (data held in host memory) to the storage array, enabling RecoverPoint to ensure all the data for that particular PIT is committed to the array and replicated to the DR site.  Think of this as the ability to ensure the audio track and film track to your movies are kept in sync with each other so you don’t get that horrible lips moving, words come later effect.
