Syncrep a current volume performance hit
I would like to Syncrep a current volume but when I try the performance hit affects my running hosts, is there a way of controlling the 'priority' of this kind of replication so it takes longer but has a much lower performance impact.

No, there's no way to adjust it. The concept of SyncRep is not to acknowledge the host until the data is on the alternate member.
What's the interconnect and latency between the two pools? That's usually where the problem occurs. Too much latency.
