600m Alps touchpad not working properly when plugged in
I have a really strange problem. It seems that when I'm plugged in using my 2 week old 600m, the Alps touchpad doesn't work right. Movement is very spotty. Sometimes it moves, sometimes it doesn't. I can only move the pointer by VERY lightly touching the touchpad, but then it only moves for a very short distance before it just stops. When I unplug from the adapter, it works just fine. I've tried playing with the sensitivity settings, checked to make sure that I have the Alps driver installed, checked that I have the latest BIOS installed, etc.
From the light sampling of postings on this forum, it appears that the Alps touchpad is just a lousy device. Am contemplating returning the whole thing just so I don't have to deal with the frustration.

I don't much about these things, but if it seems to me that if the touchpad is working fine on battery power, then it seems to be working OK and not the real problem.
My money would be on a defective power supply, perhaps allowing excessive ripple to interfer with how the touchpad readings are interpreted (touchpads are usually a three-byte packet, A ripple could cause it to read extra bytes and get off track.) But that's just a guess.

My touchpad died this weekend, but it useable if I hold down any key on my keyboard. This morning I ran the extended diagnosis test from the dell utils cd that came with my machine. It found a problem with the temperature sensor, a stuck key, the CapsLock key reports as the T key, and I couldn't even test my touchpad or stick because it didn't work.
So, assuming you've already done the reboot, the driver updates, I'd suggest running that cd. You may find something else wrong. I'd also suggest running it because after submitting my support ticket, I got an auto responder email that told me to do all of that stuff all over again.
