Black Screen on Startup

My inspiron 9300 came with xp home edition but i just did a fresh install with xp professional. After the format and the install i started loading the drivers but i wasnt aware that i had to do it in a specific order. I did a few then i did the bios update from A03 to A05 and rebooted. Now i have a black screen with nothing, not even a cursor at the top of the screen and it will shut off soon after i start. I was reading around and found that the bios update was for xp media or xp home. I now regret waiting for the right xp boot disk. Any way to fix my messups?

I don't know whether the black screen is because of bad driver loading or the BIOS update.  Try booting off your OS CD and do a reinstall of the OS.  Then install the drivers in the correct order.  If all this goes well, you should be out of the woods.  If the BIOS got corrupted during the BIOS upgrade, only a new motherboard can fix that problem.

Go to this address to identify the correct order for installing drivers:

Is there a way to boot off the disk without going into the bios to select boot from disk? I cant do anything really, nothing at all comes on the screen.

Is it possible to mayble flash the bios back to A03 with it hooked up to another computer?

If even the BIOS page will not appear on the screen, it is quite probable that the BIOS upgrade went badly and corrupted the BIOS.  You can not flash over a bad BIOS or roll back the bad upgrade.

So i gotta get a new motherboard correct? Any idea where to start looking? I already checked and dell doesnt show it in the parts and upgrades section.

Look on www.parts-people.com.

You could also try e-bay.  Most likely pay premium price otherwise, just in case cost is an issue.

I pulled the mother board out last night but forgot to look for the part number. On ebay im seeing multiple part numbers: Y4694, F7372, E1705, JD978, DC767, R8383. I tried to find the info on the dell site to figure out which board i need but no luck. Anyone know which board exactly i should be looking for?

I believe the part number for the board should be stamped on the board somewhere.  Have you checked the board you pulled out for anything that looks like a part number (check near the memory slots since some boards have the part number stamped there)?

As near as I can tell, the part # for your Insp 9300 motherboard should be Y4694, but double check to be sure.  As far as e-bay goes, you can probably e-mail the seller(s) and ask about their guarantee.  Also, specify your search criteria to the exact part you're looking for (Dell Inspiron 9300 motherboard)
