Run the Dell diagnostics on the video chip - F12 at powerup.  If it fails, record the error, call Dell, and they will replace the mainboard under warranty.

Does the BSOD occur when playing games? And is the faulting module nvlddmkm.sys?

You may well have the overheating issue I have with my M1730. My GPUs (8800M GTX SLi) hover around the 70-75 degree mark while playing Age of Conan and I will randomly get the IRQL_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL. Funnily enough when running a deskfan to the side of my laptop which has the GPUs ranging from low 50s to low 60s I don't get any errors what-so-ever.

I have looked high-and-low for a solution with none in sight, but I'm in a slightly different boat since the M1730 has 3 fans (1xCPU, 2xGPU). You may be able to use a program like l8kfangui (only has support for 2 fans) and force your fans on while gaming.

If you're getting the issue in regular Windows, try turning off Aero so your cards not having to work all the time.

You might want to try a different driver for your video card if you're using the old Dell defaults (or the newer but still old Dell performance) drivers.

Try laptopvideo2go, they have modified nVidia reference drivers for all the way up to the brand new beta drivers.

Heres a link to the 177 version drivers

http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?s=dd48fce4538ef4f6b852b9dcfdeddc43&showforum=94

Its upto 177.89 (OpenGL 3.0 Betas), I'm currently using the 177.83 on my XPS 1730, though quite a few are saying the 177.79 drivers are quite good.

-Simply click on the thread that matches the version you want to try, the OS and whether its 64 or 32bit.

-Download both the Driver and the modified .inf file linked at the top of the page (don't need to worry about the rest of the links).

-Uninstall your current nVidia driver.

-Reboot to Safe mode and run something like driversweeper (http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper) or drivercleaner (http://www.drivercleaner.net/to) to remove all references/files for the old drivers

-Reboot

-Run the driver to extract it to a folder.

-Copy the modified .inf file to that folder.

-Run the setup.exe file there.

Note: use at your own risk, there is no official sanction for using these drivers. These drivers have been known to raise the average temp of the GPU by a few degrees over the old reference drivers.

If your using Aero in Vista your GPU will be being used all the time (since its hardware accelerated 3D) so you may be having a heat related issue.

You can use something like rivatuner http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=rivatuner  (Main Tab, click the little arrow next to Customize... under the Target adapter area, click the button that looks like a magnifying glass over film), or gpuz http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1153/TechPowerUp_GPU-Z_v0.2.7.html (just click on the sensor tab), to monitor your temps and report back here.
