Dell XPS m1710 videocard replacement to advanced one

Hello everybody,

I got a question regards to videcard replacement. I have a laptop XPS m1710 with GeForce 7950 GTX. The time has come to change this to something else. I suppose the next model m1730 is equipped by GeForce 8800 that has the same slot, socket and plug. So, probably there is a possibility to change it. Is this true or not? If it is, how can i purchase GeForce 8800 to put into my laptop.

being having probs with graphic card in my m1710 which is also a nvidia 7950 gtx,you can get it seem a card to replace, was onto dell about it ,was waste of a call, get lines going throught the screen, seems a common problem after playing games with it at 18 month mark according to few companys that repair dells, seems theres a problem with soulder on chip and it gets hot  and get messed up,also the fans dont kick in in time, told if fans kick in sooner, would sort out some m1710s,bios up grade in m1710 would sort but dont see dell doing that

best of luck in hunt for g-card

Unless I'm very much mistaken, the XPS M1730 is the only Dell laptop with replaceable graphics cards?

All other models have a graphics chip - which is soldered onto the motherboard, so the only way to upgrade the graphics card, is to replace it with a motherboard which has a better graphics card on it - if such a thing exists :emotion-55:

The XPS M1710 has a seperate video card from the motherboard and is replaceable.

EDIT:When i first posted this responce i should have worded it correctly. When i said it is replaceable and seperate from the MOBO,i meant,it can be replaced by the same card 7950GTX,NOT an 8800 which is in the 1730.You could also go down to the Go 7900GS 256mb instead of the 512mb 7950GTX.

If the system is under warranty you can get it from dell, but if it is expired, you are on your own.

The 7950 is the best you can get for the M1710.  The 8700/8800 series from the M1730 will not fit the M1710.

It is not true - the 7950GTX is in fact the best card you can get for that system.  To upgrade you need a new system - the 8700 and 8800 cards that fit the M1730 do not fit the M1710.

My nVidia Geforce Go 7950 burned up in the middle of March, exactly a year and a half after I purchased the XPS M1710.  I have been using it in VGA mode for a few weeks, but I had bought the extended full warranty, which expires in September 2011.  Unfortunately, I'm in Tajikistan and Dell has no service here, but they have agreed to send me a new graphics card.  I complained that that one would just burn up, too, but Dell insists that they have solved the problem and the replacement won't burn up.

I'm going to have to replace the video card myself.  I've reviewed the service manual, and it appears that I'm going to have remove the display, the keyboard, and the palm rests to get at the video card.  Can anybody confirm this, and they talk about mylar flaps.  Without seeing the hardware I'm not sure what that means.  Will it be obvious, and is the replacement something that non-specialists that can read can do?  Just curious.  I'll have the new video card in about a week.

I also own a Dell XPS M1710.  My nVidia GeForce 7950 also failed and was replaced one month ago (March 2009).

While running AutoCAD last night, the video card failed again and Dell is sending out a technician to replace the video card/adapter again.

What have they [DELL] done, or can I do, to ensure video card #3 doesn't fail?

Did you ask?  Because Dell is the only source that could tell you.

Given that this model ceased production a while ago, I'd be very surprised if new cards were being made for it - they're likely identical to the old ones.  Once these end production, they're usually not restored to production.

Just wondering - did anyone ever answer your questions?  "How to get to the video card?"  Seems everyone is anxious to give you advise about your graphics card, but not to answe the basic questions - where is it, and how is it done..

The video card is user replaceable.Just follow the service manual and you will not have any trouble.I suggest you have some small containers handy to store

the screws. It's easy to lose the myriad of small screws you remove to get at the video card. You may even want to label the containers where the screws go.Good luck.

the dell m1730 has a completely different video card set up in fact can have in sli arangement they do not fir the dell m1710 for high end gaming the dell m1710 was sadly not too good as the video cards failed this was not dells fault nvidia gave  dell a pidly 200 plus million  dollars to fix a billion dollar problelm the most dell could do was provide an exrtra years warranty for thier m1710 video cards check that out dell has replacement cards for the fx1500m and the go 7900 series but hold your butt together the cheap one is 600 plus aussie dollars and the expensive one is 1000 plus dollars also personally i have never had any trouble getting parts from dell getting through to dell in fact it is easy be patient stand firm and ask for service parts get your tag number ready dell customer support want to hear it and will useually not proceed untill you provide it so why not its easy to find on the bottom of the laptop. once you do this the whole dell resource centre opens up the video card in a m1730 is more like a card on a desk top so fitting it to a m1710 is not useually possible but as said prior dell have new replacement cards just need the cash and once again my experience with dell is once the service tag is supplied they are pleasant polite sometimes the parts are cheaper than anywhere else so perseverence does help and best of all postage by special courier is FREE FREE

hi

you have probably done this by now but download the service manual and user manual from the dell site the replacing of the video card is simple if you follow the instructions and replace parts in order of disassembly. also the first time take your time the weakest point is the keyboard do not brak the conector be patient and careful warranty will be void i think follow the service manual instructions and all should be well i personally do not disconect the screen anymore i gently fold it back and  keep it attached to the top plastic but once you have done it it becomes easier
