***SOLUTION***

This is a hardware problem, not a software problem. I am running the factory Win 7 home x64 and dual booting Ubuntu 12.04 x64, with this exact problem in both OS's.

What I did is I took out the keyboard and the palm rest (there should be a tear down guide put out by Dell) and you should see a coin cell battery. I took it out for about 10 seconds and then put it back in. I also checked all the other connections and removed and reseated the HDD.

I then went into BIOS and made sure there weren't any funky settings. It now shuts down, suspends, and wakes properly (only tested in Ubuntu 12.04)

I have no clue how or why, but that's what did it.

Thanks Adam_SQL, that worked for me.  Did not have to reseat the HDD, just removed the battery.  Worked perfect after that!

Hi Nuruie,

Welcome to the community

This seems to be a simple issue to be fixed. We have to change few settings on the system for fixing it. Please find the necessary steps below to be followed

1. Go to Start menu and control panel

2. Under control panel please select Power options

3. Under poer options please select choose what power buttons do

4. Select the option which says shutdown.

5. Also select choose what closing the lid do and select shut down

This should fix the issue on the system.

Let us know the progress

Thanks & Regards

Hi,

Welcome to Dell community forums.

As you mentioned in the above post that your computer is not turning off after shut down, I would suggest you to follow few steps which might fix the issue.

  • First of all, Shut down your computer and then Remove the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord from your Dell notebook, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds to discharge any residual current inside the laptop. This clears your RAM and is like hardware reset.  Try to restart your computer and then try to shut down your computer and then check if your system is turning off or not, if issue is still not fixed proceed to the next step.

  • Go to Device Manager and then IEEE1394 Bus Controller. Right click the controller and go to the "Power Management" tab.Check-mark "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.Your computer should shut down completely now.

  • If still that doesn’t work, Right click on your desktop>Properties>settings where you change your screen resolution,>advanced, there it should give you options what to do when you want to shutdown, restart or hibernate. I would suggest you to change the settings.

Please reply in case you have any questions.

Thanks & Regards

Hello,

I am also facing the same problem. I have tried all the 3 options which you gave.

I have formatted the machine again with Win7 64 bit with service pack 1, updated windows and drivers, also to the latest BIOS. Still the laptop does not shut down the windows 7.

My Service TAG number is <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>

Please suggest the way forward.

Please mail the solution to  <ADMIN NOTE: Email id removed per privacy policy> or you can reach me on +256 776510281

Hi mostafait ,

We can do few troubleshooting steps:

  1. Click on start-> right click computer-> device manager.
  2. In device manager click (+) sign near network adapter.
  3. Under network adapter right click wireless adapter n1030 Power Management" tab. uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  4. Under network adapter-> right click RTL8111E Fast Ethernet controller Management" tab. uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  5. Go to Start menu and control panel
  6. Under control panel , select Power options
  7. Under power options please select choose what power buttons do
  8. Select the option which says shutdown.
  9. Also select “choose what closing the lid do” and select shut down

If this does not work then try to update the BIOS on the computer by following the link for your reference:

Please post back with the results.

I have did almost every thing possible but unable to fix the problem, the issue is same with N5110, that it does not properly shuts down, instead I have to press and hold power button to switch it off. Even I updated the BIOS as well, I don't have IEEE 1394 Bus Controller in Device Manager, only IEEE 1394 Bus Controller I haven't tried because of its unavailability. Please suggest .

Thanks
