E4300 Latitude Webcam Problem - FYI
This is an FYI for others that may have this issue, which I am posting because when I searched the forums I did not see a solution. I have a E4300 Latitude running XP Pro, and am very pleased with it overall. A problem developed with my webcam which I did not use frequently. It worked when I first got it, then months later it stopped working. Symptoms: the software would activate, the webcam LED would light up, but all it would show was a black screen with an icon of 2 people and a lock symbol. I could take a photo, but the photo would be the same black screen with an icon. No problems in System-Hardware devices. Dell Hardware diagnostics checked out. Running current Bios. I had previously upgraded the Webcam software, and tried other webcam software, and the driver, so I downgraded back and forth but the problem still existed no matter what.
The solution: do not use the latest Dell Driver for the integrated webcam that was released 3/9/09, and rolling back the driver did not work either. In a non forum post, I saw that this latest driver was also linked to a resume from suspend BSOD, though that was not my issue. Anyways, instead of rolling back the driver, I had to download and then install an old driver (clicking Yes to use the old one and uninstall the newer one), and now the integrated webcam works again. So...
