ijlrp,

Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum.

Unfortunately, because the BIOS checks for, and requires, a battery, it should not be possible for you update your system’s BIOS without a working battery.

There is a way, but it is dangerous. The Battery requirement is a Dell Safety Procedure to insure you do not fry your BIOS Chip if you have a Power failure during the Procedure(or kick the AC Adapter Cord loose as I once did) When it refuses to flash because of the missing battery, hit enter instead of rebooting. You will go back to an A: prompt; you type the BIOS Flash Command, skip a space and add /forceit. Now, if you do this, I take no responsibility for your actions or the results. I have done this once without incident, but I was very careful not to kick the cord loose again!
