No, you cannot -- the Core 2 uses a different socket and support chipset from the newer Core i3/5/7 CPU.  You can use any of the Core 2 Duo mobile C***, but NOT the newer Core i3, i5 or i7.

I saw that a certain cor i5 procesor--Intel® Core™ i5-520M Processor, was compatable with the 1545, it is a dual core model, and released in early 2010, and on a site it listed this as one of the many compatable cpu's. I was just ondering if this was corect or incorect. thanks.

It is completely incorrect.  You cannot use any Core i in place of any Core 2.

I found out the hard way that the Dell bios does not recognize the T7500, so it all depends on the bios. **The revision of the processor in the system is not supported.

I've been looking through the Intel website so I don't know how far up the intel core 2 duo I can upgrade to.  So I know I have a Celeron 900 with 800Mhz FSB 2.2Ghz.  Another forum tried the T6400 but I was thinking of the X9000 2.8GHz or the T9500.  They're both 800MHz FSB and PGA478 socket, there were lower clock speeds but I don't know whether I can upgrade up to the X9000 or even a higher FSB say a 1066MHz hence why I thought staying in the 800MHz range of CPUs might be best.

Opinions anyone?

thanks. I didn't know the motherboard will run at 1066MHz.  Couldn't find any motherboard specs to look at so I can see what the maximum of anything, I can put in.

You can forget the X processors - they draw far too much power for the 1545.  The fastest CPU shipped (the P8700) is a 25W CPU.  The X9000 draws 44 W -- there's no way the 1545 can handle that.

Fitted a 2.53Ghz 1066MHz FSB and it works but crashes when watching dvds or playing battlestar galactica online.  So I've ordered a 2.4Ghz 800Mhz FSB intel core 2 duo.  I decided to keep to the same FSB as the original Celeron CPU that was in it.  We'll see how that goes.  I shouldn't think I'll have problems, a bit of a shame I have to loose .13 Ghz and 200MHz FSB but it's better than having a Celeron 900MHz CPU in it.....lol.

Update.

I was wrong about the PC crashing when I fitted the CPU.  It crashed because the Intel wifi card was faulty.  The PC will not run the Intel 6200 series wifi card so I went and purchased an Atheros and it runs fine.  So yes an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53Ghz 1066Mhz chip runs fine.  Well it is the highest on the Intel Core 2 Duo CPU family for that bus speed and socket.  PGA478 or PCGA478?? I forget the socket but that one anyway
