Inspiron 5100 USB Ports

The USB ports on my Inspiron 5100 won't work. I've tried everything-Windows Update, removing/reinstalling in device manager, reinstalling Windows, cleaning out ports-except replacing the motherboard and installing nongeneric drivers. I was wandering if there were supposed to be using certain drivers or if I should beusing the generic drivers that Windows XP came with. Are there any drivers provided by Dell?

Thanks, that'll probably help in the future. As for now, I managed to fix the ports by connecting an external generic USB splitter and connecting a 6 volt plug to it when it only wants 5 volts. That surged my built in ports. When I disconnected the external splitter and reset the built in ports from Windows, they work! I plugged the splitter back in along with a USB mouse and flash drive, and they all seem to be working perfectly. I haven't shut off the computer yet for fear that they might not work, but I'll have to soon. Hopefully they'll still work.
