Laptop mouse (left-click) isnt working

Well, sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't work, it acts as if i'm holding down the button. Which would be fine if my hand was anywhere near the touch pad (which it isn't).
So then I tried to use the touch pad instead (when my button isn't working), and it still acts as if it's being held down. So then I get aggravated, and just tap three times as hard as normal, and it works! I'm concerned that something's loose. Any suggestions, short of buying an external mouse?
Oh, and is there any way I can clean under the button? That was my original thought, but I don't know if it's possible, let alone easy.
Thank you in advance!

You dont mention model, but replace the palm-rest. Most dont cost much, and are quite easy to fit. Make sure there is nothing spilled or something jamming it.

Oh that makes sense! I didn't realize you could replace those. I'll look into it.
It's an inspiron 6000, by the way.
And thank you kindly!
