Remove `boot-menu` F12 Inspiron 1764
Hi,
Is there a way to remove the ability to go into the boot-menu at startup by pressing the F12 key? I don't want this feature as I'm trying to lock down the system, and don't want a user to be able to simply boot from a usb/cdrom drive.
I'm pretty sure there is no option to remove these POST keys anywhere in my BIOS. I think my BIOS version is A01 (do the later versions have the boot-menu, or the ability to remove it at least?). I tried flashing the BIOS to A11 and A13 but neither worked; do I need to jump to an older version first.

Hi Fpghost84,
The BIOS version on this system does not have this option. If you want to disable the USB boot option, you can go to BIOS and disable 'External USB Ports' Under 'Advanced option. However, this might disable the USB ports of the computer.

Hi Fpghost84,
The 'F12' menu options are configured from the factory and by default remain the same. Unfortunately, there is no option to change them.

Oh, is this even the case in the later BIOS editions? I know some other dell models have options in the BIOS to remove the hot keys like F12 at boot.. (e.g. this thread about an older model: en.community.dell.com/.../19065494.aspx)

Hi, OK thanks for letting me know anyway.
Is there a way I can update my BIOS to latest version anyway? I've tried downloading and running both A11 and A13 (i.e. FLASHME_v103_Win_1194_4M_1764A) and running as administrator but both fail for some reason (all that happens is a black command prompt pops up momentarily before disappearing then the message tells me update failed)

Hi, thanks for the reply, but on the first link you gave I don't see any .iso files only two .exe files, explicitely they are "1764A13_win.exe" and "FLASHME_v103_Win_1194_4M_1764A.exe". Where is the .iso file to which you refer? Also these versions are A13 not A09 it seems?

Hi Fpghost84,
Please check the current BIOS version on your computer. If it shows A13, then you would not be able to update the BIOS. If it is shows a different version, then download the exe file from the link http://dell.to/T1PKk9 , please use the information mentioned in this article http://bit.ly/BG9Ts to create the .iso file.
