Synaptics pointing device error / erratic typing

I have been having a lot of trouble with an "erratic cursor" that causes my typing to bounce to different places.  While investigating, I found steps to try but am getting the following message:  "Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device".  I checked the driver and was told it was up to date.  Any suggestions for either problem?
