Vostro 1500 boot from USB flash drive
I have a Vostro 1500 and need to boot from a USB flash( or sometimes called a thumb drive) drive. I select F12 at boot, then select USB devices. My flash drive is present in the USB port. I receive the message to "remove the media and hit any key". I remove the flash drive, select a key (F12 won't work) and the computer boots to the normal desktop (WIN XP PRO SP3). Power down, go through the same procedure, BUT leave the flash drive in the USB port, select a key and the computer boots to the desktop.
I have tried several different ways found on the internet to format the flash drive, but none work with my vostro 1500. I know the USB port is good because I can read and write to a flash drive used as a storage device.
Is the Vostro 1500 capable of booting from a flash drive? The BIOS says "boot from USB devices"; does that include a flash drive?
What is the correct procedure to prepare a flash drive to boot a Vostro 1500? I want to place the XP PRO set up/ install disk on the flash drive and boot the XP PRO set up / install from the flash drive.
Thanks
