XPS 17 L702x - Issue with GPU - Screenshots inside!

Hello there,

I have a Dell XPS 17'' L702X and my GPU is not used by my applications/games. Instead, it uses the Intel HD 3000 chipset even when I run on high performance power configuration and when I whitelist the application in the nVidia control panel.

I did a fresh install of Windows x64 Pro Edition.

The laptop came with the A14 bios version. I found an update of this Bios Version on your website, and flashed my Bios. This did not change anything, and this version is not on your website anymore.

I tried to install the nVidia drivers present on the CD which came with the laptop, my system was not reckognized.

I changed the nvam.inf file to trick the installer to accept my system, and the driver has been successfully installed. The problem was still here.

I installed the 290.36 nVidia drivers (beta) using the same trick, it still does not work.

I tried to call the tech support from my coutry (France) and they say they'll call me back today (because they had database issues yesterday), but they did not. Their office are closed now.

Here are some screenshots to emphasize:

Everything else (sound, quickset, wifi etc...) is working perfectly. There is some discussions on the notebookreview.com's forums (I'm not the only one having this issue) but there's still no news about an eventual solution.

I came here to explain the problem a second time and to be in touch with more customers/techies.

All the best :)

The new nVidia drivers on Dell's website solved the issue!

Many thanks to all the techies who worked on that fix =)

I'm also having this problem. I've only just noticed it - first time looking at GPU stuff (first time playing games! flash games shouldn't stutter on a dell xps l502x gaming platform!)

GPU-Z confirms NVIDIA load is always zero.

I have an old build that is really buggy (full of registry cleaners and bad apps and a few bugs) that doesn't have this problem (same OS, on same laptop, same hardware - GeForce GT540M with same driver) - interestingly, the old OS doesn't exhibit this problem...

Does anyone have this laptop, that doesn't have this problem?

If so, can you clarify what you have in "Programs & Features" for NVIDIA?

On my old-build, under NVIDIA, there's the GeForce entry, and (on same install date) an entry called "NVIDIA Drivers". On new builds, this mysterious "NVIDIA Drivers" entry is absent...

This is the only difference I can see**

The only advice seems to be "clean install required, install Intel first" but I've already been stringent with driver-installation-order (previously trying to get WiDi setup! another issue! Goddamn Intel!!!)

**(except that, on new builds, despite being an administrator, I can't get explorer to behave as close to how I wanted - UAC is disabled, but still I don't have the authority to call my batch files that require admin... this is not related to the main 'optimus technology not working'  issue at hand

starting to litter forums now but this post, right here, is the second to reference inf.mods... and instinct is making me ponder... plus I'm out of warranty (bought off ebay) so no chat support

My install order

Tried to launch this but all your support documents seem broken [:'(]
