dell 1420 laptop

I have a very well taken care of and slightly used 1420.  Was using it the other night for about 10 minutes when I went to plug the charger in and zap the whole computer shut off and will not do anything.  no lights nothing.  tried to take battery out and some other things but it is dead???  battery works in other computers and charger as well...  can it be a fuse that blew or the motherboard???  any help is appreciated. thx
