Disabling it is not supported in the Windows nor the Alps control panels. You are looking at doing a non-supported registry hack. Perhaps another Latitude user will post such a hack.

do I understand correctly, what is it still possible through editing the registry?

In most cases, yes, this data can be found in the registry. But other users would have to find it. We at Dell cannot.
