Windows 2008 host unable to format VNX luns in default NTFS format

I assigned VNX Luns on a windows 2008 hosts but it is unable to format it as NTFS.

First, it takes a long time to format and then at the end it keeps it in RAW format.

This host is currently using luns from SUN storage and we need to migrate it to VNX

Please help with the resolution

Thanks

Ankush

Hello,

There are many possibilities that come to mind.  Are you using quick format?  Perhaps try to format from the server console.  Is it possible you are trying to format a LUNZ?  Do you have PowerPath on the server?  Does the lun you are attempting to format show in PowerPath?

These are just a few things to consider.  Perhaps a service request with EMC is needed to review the EMCReports.

I suggest getting a service request open so support can review the EMCReports and SP collects.

Failover mode is set to 4

Same result for all luns

I was already working with single path and I tried removing MPIO as well, rebooted host and tried again and got the same result ☹

Are you using a failover mode of 4 on the VNX?

Do you have the same result for all luns or just one?

Do you have the same result if you reduce to a single path and remove MPIO?

Ankush, The driver version is obsolete. The lastest version recommended by EMC for most of Emulex HBA (not CNAs) drivers is 2.74.014. You can check your Emulex HBA model for the exact version.

You must upgrade the driver and firmware to a supported level first. i remember 2.10 was from w2k3 time before the VNX was released. This may be your issue.

To check the drivers for your HBA, Follow the belkow link::

http://www.emulex.com/downloads/oem-qualified/emc/

let us know if it got fixed.

As per Mohammed Salem, just keep in mind if the HBA is an OEM product that is supported for EMC Use, be sure to obtain the latest driver from the OEM provider rather than the manufacturer as this will be important if other non-EMC arrays are in the loop.
