Hard Drive

Had a 10 yr old Dell Inspiron.  Would not turn on after a storm.  Bought a new Inspiron.  How do I access old hard drive for data.  Is asking for some kind of code or login?

Best option is to install the old drive in an external USB connected adapter.  You can then access user data.

HDD Password FAQ KB 000132226

Bios Locked hard drives are not accessable unless you are the FBI or Law enforcement. Moving them to another system does not allow you to access the data.  It must be put back into the original computer and the bios HDD password cleared.  You did not say which model. There is no panacia one size fits all for clearing HDD password.  Don't even know if this is desktop or laptop.

There are two parts to this:

First, you'll need to contact Dell support.  Upon verification of ownership, they'll assist you in removing the HDD portion of the password.

Next, unless there is data on the drive you need, the less expensive option is to simply replace the drive.

If there is data on the drive you need, you'll need to send the drive to a data recovery service that can remove the hard drive password.

Note:  DO NOT install another drive until you have the HDD password removed.  Clearing CMOS WILL NOT remove a BIOS HDD Password. If install a drive in a system that has hdd password, that drive will be locked with the unknown password as well.

Unless you really need this system, bear in mind you're in for a $60 support call plus the cost of a drive ($50 or so) or the cost of having the password removed (another $200 or so, minimum).  The system itself is not really worth the cost to unlock it.

Non locked hard drives can use a Drive wire.

hey there! In case you were not able to transfer the old drive to your new computer with the USB and need a good data recovery service, I would recommend either SalvageData or OutSource Data Recovery. Both offer free evaluation.  Cheers!
