Inspiron 3668, PSU upgrade

Jump to solution

Hi.

I am helping my friend with upgrading just purchased Inspiron 3668 GPU upgrade. He want to go stronger than GTX 1050TI and thus, will need PSU upgrade.

I am aware about 8 pin MOBO PSU connector, Moddly will help here, but PSU itself?

I found a few Bestecs PSUs (not the best quality, oh well), First and Second.

Question regarding actual physical fit dimensions, would it work. Anyone knows?

I also found similar Bestec on Amazon with the list of older Dell supported models, too much to take space here, please check the LINK. Would those Bestecs fit Inspiron 3668 as well.

If someone (like SpeedStep) knows better alternatives, we are open for suggestions.

Please advise.

Appreciate in advance as always.

The INSPIRON 3668 is SUB COMPACT.  Which means it wont take full size cards let alone anything near a full size power supply.  Looking in the Service manual I see that its a 6 PIN not 8 pin like the 3650.  They don't like you updating or upgrading.

Using power supply Outside the case with an adapter is possible.  This is the UGLY MOD but it works.

The VOSTRO 3667/3668 is even smaller.

https://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/vostro-3667-desktop_owners-manual_en-us.pdf

If you wanted to upgrade you should not have purchased a sub compact.

Short Cards will fit.  Power supply would have to go outside the case running wires thru the hole left behind by removing the power supply entirely.

HOWEVER you need to hack the power supply as the stock unit is too tiny and too small.  The 4 pin ATX power connection is fine but the 24 Pin needs an adapter to 8 pins. Recommended power supply is also very specific.EVGA SuperNOVA 750 B1, 80+ BRONZE 750W, 110-B1-0750-VR

The B1 works fine.  B2 BQ G2 GS etc DOES NOT WORK.  You have to remove the stock unit and leave the new unit OUTSIDE The case because it physically does not fit inside.  Secure Boot must be OFF and Legacy CSM on.

Thanks SppedStep

Good catch regarding 6 pin MOBO PSU connector, I did not expect it and overlooked.

but the 24 Pin needs an adapter to 8 pins. (copy and paste from previous posts? That how I missed 6pin connector, my eyes not so good, saw small and assumed 8)

Its probably possible to get it working but its not plug and play nor is it Physically Possible to get a standard EPS12v  power supply INSIDE the case.  So the 3650 example is an Its ugly but it works.

My text is large all the time because its Hard for me to see when its smaller.

Its likely you need to modify the moddiy adapter to use 6 pins.

So the Pinout for the 6 is 2 Black wires which are Ground  2 White Wires which are 12v,  One Green Wire which is PSON and one Grey Wire which is PWR Good.

Using power supply Outside the case with an adapter is possible.  This is the UGLY MOD but it works.

Re: Inspiron 3668, PSU upgrade

Don't mean to hijack the thread but I am in a similar boat.   Got my kid a 3668 a couple years ago he's now ready to go for a 1060 or better.   I was thinking of just buying a new case and PS but I saw that this has the odd 6 pin connector.   Did you end up getting this to work?  Anyone know if some sells a 24 to 6 pin adapter?   Am I just better off getting a $50 mobo?

Thanks!

There isn't any way for a 3668 to work with a 1060. There is no cookie cutter water chicken solution.  EGPU might be the way to go but this too is experimental aka use PCI-E extension and external power supply and catch your house on fire jury rig electrical connections. AKA EXP GDC "The BEAST"

The 3670 actually has that as an option with the 365W dell power supply.

Should be no problem however with a Low Profile GDDR5 GT 1030.

Re: Inspiron 3668, PSU upgrade

I got a DT 3668 for my daughter and she wanted to play games with better FPS. I got her a MSI GTX 1060, I have a BFG ATX PS 550W laying around, tried to convert 24pin to 6pin but it didn't work. The reason is Dell PSU uses standby 12V, ATX PSU has 5V standby, therefore none of these ATX PSU would work except the one that has 12V V standby.

I used a 12V relay, spliced the 12V from hard drive connector as inputs - outputs to pin Green (PSON) and Black (Ground). Connect the PCIE 6 pin 12V power to the graphic card and everything works perfectly. PC power on, external PS on, PC power Off, external PC Off.

If you had bought a 24pin to 6pin adapter, would it work to connect the power supply to the motherboard? I saw this adapter on Ebay, after a couple researches cause I also have a Inspiron 3668.

I am still confused. Is it possible to upgrade to, for example, a VGA Geforce GTX 1660 XC card given a external psu is installed? AND if so, is the EVGA Supernova 750 B1 the ONLY one that works? +Is a SSD installation possible, with a SATA cable?

Max upgR  is low profile GT1030.

power supply mod is required

Moddiy has been tested and works fine.

There is even a guy who made his own adapter from scratch.
