Inspiron 3670 Tower - Is it possible to upgrade the optical DVD drive?

Hello, Is it possible to upgrade the optical DVD drive to a Blu-ray drive? It's tough to tell if there is even space for an aftermarket dvd-player or Blu-ray player based on the service manual pictures. The Blu-ray player that I want to install is the following: LG WH14NS40 Amazon Link for specs: https://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-Internal-Rewriter-WH14NS40/dp/B007VPGL5U If this is not possible, are there any other Dell Tower options where I can upgrade to a Blu-ray player? Thanks,

Have a look at this thread.

You might go to the Dell Sales site and click the slider to chat with a sales person about which Inspiron can either be bought with or upgraded to have a BR drive.

And maybe contact Dell Spare Parts (1-800-357-3355) and ask if they have a suitable BR drive that will fit the Inspiron 3670. Have your Service Tag handy if you contact them.

But bottom line, if you want an Inspiron, then a USB BR drive may be your easiest/best option...

Firstly, I want to thank RoHE and speedstep for your inputs over the past 24 hours. I was doubtful that anyone would spend the time to help me with my question and I appreciate it since we all know what it's like to try and contact Dell directly to answer these questions (which isn't the most convenient). RoHE, thanks for referencing the other thread which talked about the external enclosure option (which I was skeptical at first, but this NexStar product appears to be better with USB 3.0) Here is the product link: https://www.amazon.com/NexStar-External-Enclosure-Blu-Ray-Drive/dp/B01MRUN0HQ/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 To your point, I think it's going to take a phone call or chat with Dell Sales directly in order to see if an Inspiron can be upgraded to the Dell Proprietary Bluray drive. Thanks to speedstep on sharing another external enclosure option (OWC Mercury Pro model) since other users may not know about other options. I don't know what the actual size is of the optical drive that is in the Inspiron 3670 (but it's looks like a 12mm). To close this thread, here are my final thoughts: Since I already have an older Dell Tower (that has plenty of room for anything aftermarket). If I ever wanted to go for the latest Dell towers (whether Inspiron or XPS), I would just have Dell customize the new tower with their Dell-Proprietary bluray drive and then buy an external enclosure (since I already have an internal 5.5" bluray drive) just in case the Dell-Proprietary bluray drive ever failed. Thanks again for your inputs since I'm sure there will be others like me who want to do more with just the standard DVD-drive. :-)

There's always an external USB3 Blu-Ray drive...

Thanks RoHE on the suggestion of getting an external Blu-ray drive. It will be my last resort. :-) I did some searching on the Dell's website and it doesn't appear that there isn't an option to at least upgrade to a Dell-proprietary BDRE drive with the Inspiron desktop models. However, if you go to the XPS 8930 model, there is an option to upgrade to the Dell BDRE. If there is an Inspiron model where you can upgrade to a Dell BDRE, please let me know. I suspect that Dell doesn't allow for aftermarket Blu-ray drives on the latest desktop models which is unfortunate. Perhaps, it conflicts with the overall tower design since the current optical drive slot is very slim (compared to the traditional 3.5" size). Thanks,

Not sure if the 3670 uses 9mm or 12mm optical drive.

The Dell will take a Slim BD drive. Personally I'm using the larger BD drives in external enclosures. Since the Slim BD drives are expensive and also much slower.

It is possible to upgrade the drive.

USB3 is not required however for working blueray playback.

Which is why LG BP50NB40 8x external USB 2.0 Blu-ray Disc rewriter works fine.

HOWEVER you will pay a lot to have one internal.

If you did not order the unit with a drive there will be many parts including the face plate that need to be changed.  Dell will not be helpful finding the faceplate, mounting bracket,  DVD 6 pin power cable, etc.

I almost always get external.  If I want the drive due to movies I buy a retail bundle Drive that has CYBERLINK POWER DVD for blueray at least version 12 or higher.

The Samsung Lucky Goldstar BP50NB40 is USB2 and works on everything I've tried it on.
