Inspiron 3847, GeForce 8400 GS, Blank screen

Jump to solution

I have an Inspiron 3847. Graphics are limited as the onboard graphics is vga only.

I removed the graphics card from an older Dimension 8400, a GeForce 8400 GS. It was definitely working at the time of removal.

If I boot up with the onboard graphics connected I just get a message to say it's been superceded.

If I boot up with the GeForce connected, the PC starts up ok but I get a blank screen. I assumed this was a driver issue. I have downloaded the driver but you can't install without the card in place and you can't do that working blind.

I've seen some conversations about altering visual settings in the BIOS but that doesn't seem to be an option on my machine.

Any help would be much appreciated, I can't believe this hasn't happened to somebody else.

You have to turn SECURE BOOT OFF and LEGACY CSM and OPTION ROMS ON.

However if its a PCI-E 1.0 based card it still may not work.

PCI-E 1.0 cards are too slow for PCI-E 3.0 bus.

* The 2013 Inspiron 3847 has two onboard Intel HD video out ports, #5 HDMI and #6 VGA =

* List all of the video out ports on the GeForce 8400 GS
* List all of the video in ports on the monitor

* The added 2009 GeForce 8400 GS video card should be installed in the #3 PCIe x16 slot =

Cheers for that, did the biz now up and running.

Boot Mode is [UEFI] and boot devices are different, otherwise yes.
