Inspiron 3847 - No OS image available

I am having some annoying issues with my machine so decided to download the OS recovery tool and set everything back to factory condition. Unfortunately, when I run the program it gives me the message "No OS images for the tag though images exist for the product". This seems to say that we have images for your system but not for your particular machine, and I am trying to understand why and whether there is some way I can do a factory reset. The PC originally came with windows 10 installed but as there were some conflicts with the software I needed at the time I changed to windows 7. That is no longer an issue and I would be quite happy with Windows 10 but alas it seems it wont give me anything. Anyone know why this is and what, if anything I can do about it. It will save me days of work tracking down and trying to fix the individual problems which all seem to stem from updating drivers. Yes, I have rolled stuff back, reinstalled etc but all to no avail so far. Thanks.

3847's never came with 10  they did come with 8.

An OEM system builder windows 10 DVD will reinstall without issue.

The Dell recovery partition is probably corrupted due to installing Win 7.  In many cases, installing something other than the original OS will cause this.

Best option now is to use the Windows Media Creation tool to create a bootable USB flash drive and do a clean install of Win 10.  Windows will install most drivers if you are "on line" (connected) when you install.  Anything missing can be downloaded from the Dell downloads for your model.

Here is the instructions from the tenforums.com

Interesting as the reason I changed to Win7 was so my home studio software would run rather than me having to upgrade everything. Any music samples out there?

Maybe not where you are but here in Thailand, where I live, it definitely had Windows ten installed when I purchased is 3 years ago.

I use Cakewalk (now BandLab) Sonar for my home recording studio.  It runs on Win 7/Win 8/Win 10.

Same way my recording interface, currently an MOTU 4pre has drivers for Win 7/8/10.

power  on cold, long press power and hammer F8 key

got the recovery page?  that be first. but if w7 was loaded, over w10, this page can go BAD.

or get the MS ISO and load w10 it runs for 30 days free.

then do the activate, this looks in your BIOS for THE COA, and if happy PC is happy if not call MS

and beg for, Activation on the phone, never heard or seens them DECLINE their policy is lax now, with calls.

ive even changed motherboard 3 times on one PC and MS was AOK with that,  even called. on a phone.

They infact have never blocked me,  but sure if XP now ,  sure w10 is declined. as expected, and soon w7 I bet.

MS does not field (allow ) calls on XP , VISTA and soon W7, for COA issues, (lost , wrong, hard to read etc)

that is what the do, cut the phone line if activation fails on legacy OS. (and some keys are now hacked so....)

I hope your COA In BIOS is accepted, I surely do.

but  Thailand , no idea me on any licensing rules at all , the  about IS USA  experiences only.

yes that page at dell is a  stinker,  it is not kept up to date there with hard facts, at all , it puts you through the pain as you saw, with making recovery media that does not exist or work. I think it should say on that page

then posted to USA forum in English you sneak in  Thailand , wow, just wow on that. "but welcome sure"

LEGACY warning   XP,VISTA ,W7 ,W8  NOT supported, at all and does say only 64bit is allowed a few lines down. (it may have to see click here for w8 exceptions....)

you said you downgrade it to w7 (32bit or 64bit?) and did not say how. nor who' media you used, dells, MS or the box at Walmart w7 on the shelf.  seen there for years and at Target and BestBuy.

So you must have bought a COA to gain, w7, IDK  at all what you did.

but the F8 recovery partition is w10 , so that is useless to you now. may be dead on  Thailand PCs IKD ever. that.

MS ended w7 support and DISKS and ISO's and more. best  is to forget W7, but who am I to tell you what you want. I will not, all I can do is convey facts and steps to gain back a working PC.

Licensing of OS is a complex topic and painful wild changes, for last 5 years. free w10 and all. then.

OEM licenses are not RETAIL (but, there are exceptions)

Some PC had w8 new, and MS allows free upgrade to w10 on all of them, the COA is stored in BIOS

YMMV your PC may vary

so when you install w10 , it sees that and allows that, my guess is w10 will do the same, (hope)

I'd go w10 and then if one device fails ask for help, fix them 1 by 1 or run the Dell support Assistant.,  first.

here is the DELL stinker page (ive complained to them vast times , for the above (lack of facts)

https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln299044/how-to-download-and-use-the-dell-os-recovery-image-in-microsoft-windows?lang=en

good luck there, ok.  I do wish it all works out ok for you,

the first thing to do is run HDD S.M.A.R.T test , or waste endless time installing any OS there. if bad.even weak.

BTW, 2: if you did load w7 good luck with over 350 updates from MS they can be very hard to get. 24yours to get and rebooting 10 or more times,,, load IE11 first, (Hint Hint)

32 bit everything is abandoned by Microsoft, INTEL, AMD, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, etc.

Any new hardware is 64 bit only,  UEFI only, GPT only, NO CSM, No Legacy, No MBR windows 10, OSX, Linux etc are also enforcing this.

Warning from Apple about 32 bit softwareWarning from Apple about 32 bit software

As early as Windows Server 2008 R2 ships with a 64-bit SKU only; no 32-bit SKU is available.

Current version of windows server is 2019.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/cloud-platform/windows-server

Windows Server 2019 is a Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release

That  affects 32-bit versions of Windows 7, 8/8.1, 10, Linux and FreeBSD. That means it's time for an upgrade, unless you're playing games in a cave and not connected to the internet.

AMD has discontinued driver support for 32-bit operating systems. The Radeon Software Adrenalin 18.9.3 WHQL driver was the last 32-bit driver EVER from AMD.

INTEL killed 32 bit in 2015 with 2nd Generation Core series being the last 32 bit support.

Thank you all for your insights and help. I had wrongly assumed the OS image tool would allow me to download an image. I suspect it is corrupted or gone from the hard drive and as I no longer have need of Win 7 I shall wipe everything and do a clean install of win 10. I have also located a site with the original earlier drivers which I shall also download and install as I suspect the newer versions are where my problems started.

I did keep a copy of the original driver set but unfortunately I had two backup drives go down within two weeks of each other a while ago and have never managed to recover the stuff that was on them. Such is life eh!

Sorry if you felt I was being "Sneaky" by posting from Thailand. I didn't realise the forums were separated geographically but I am glad I did end up here as I now know more than I did a couple of days ago.

Thanks again to one and all for your assistance.

Drivers for Dell are at the main site.

https://downloads.dell.com/

Your model

http://downloads.dell.com/published/pages/inspiron-3847-desktop.html

Windows 10 OEM media does not care whether its home or Pro

The disk is one and the same.

Product key comes from COA or from within bios.

@speedstep Mine did and it too is a Dell PC and it's a 3847. Perhaps after 8 hit the high road they began installing 10?
