Inspiron 5680, SSD compatibility?

So I know in the product description it says that it only supports up to a 256GB SSD. I am wondering if that means a total of 256GB for both the M.2 slot and the 2.5" slot? Or if they can both have up to 256GB? So have a 256GB SSD in the 2.5" slot and a 256GB SSD in the M.2 slot as well. 256GB capacity across both slots just doesn't seem like very much in a 2018 desktop.

Thanks!

I know nothing about this machine (and don't see a reason to go study the manuals to give you an answer).

I'll just say that there is no "size limit" for SSDs. If it was worded like that, it's either a typo or that is just the max size they sell on factory-configs.

The 256 GB is for the M.2 slot (Boot Drive). The manual states a 2 TB max for the storage drive (2.5" slot). It specifies 2 TB HDD but there is no reason you cannot install up to a 2 TB SSD in the hard drive location. So to answer your specific question, yes you can have a 256 GB drive in both locations. Though considering how prices have dropped I would opt for at least a 500 GB 2.5" drive.

M2 B Keyed SATA is not the same as M keyed only PCI-E X4 AHCI.  These are not interchangeable but they both fit into an M2 Slot.

It may also be a 2242 instead of 2280 or 22110 which would make sense if the max size is 256.   Recently found this to be the case for my Latitude Z600 because its ancient and has 256 max.
