Inspiron 5680, M.2 SSD type supported?
In the Service Manual, page 17, item #16, "M.2 SATA connector".
Will SATA M.2 drives and NVMe M.2 drives both work on this motherboard?
Edit: I ordered a SATA type M.2, because all the SSD on the Dell Inspiron 5680 come with "SATA M.2". It would be nice to specify somewhere in the manual that NVMe drives won't work. If that's the case. No NVMe support on a 2018 gaming desktop, not impressed.

OK, I got my Samsung 960 EVO NVMe to work after playing around in the BIOS for a bit. It was showing up on the first page under the list of HDD's, but it wouldn't let me install windows or it wouldn't recognize it outside of the BIOS. I changed the SATA Operation on the Advanced tab to AHCI and that seemed to have fixed it. I was able to clean install Windows through a USB drive that way on the SSD.

If I am not mistaken the top M.2 is NVME. The one on the bottom is SATA 6GB so if you got a SATA M.2 then put it in the lower slot.

Easy upgradability: Your gaming machine comes with up to 460 Watt Power Supply Unit (PSU), and support for up to 4 storage devices for future upgrades (2x 3.5" bays, 1x 2.5" bay, and 1x M.2 slot).
1x M.2 slot on the website, not two.
Either the manual or the website is wrong. The website states that there is 4 memory slots, the picture shows 2 slots and an extra M.2 slot where the memory slots should be.

My bad I just realized this is the new Inspiron 5680 with the 8th Gen Intel CPU. Not the Inspiron 5675 which has 2 M.2 slots and has AMD Ryzen. I don't think it will work as it 1 NVME m.2 not like the 5675 which has both.

A rep told me (in chat):
"I see that this desktop supports :
One 2.5-inch hard drive
Two 3.5-inch hard drive
SATA 6 Gbps for 2.5-inch hard drive
PCIe/NVMe for Solid-state drive
Intel Optane for Solid-state drive"
So, there you go.

so do we plug the NVME PCIe SSD into the same port #16 marked M.2 SATA?

Hi, I just received my Inspiron 5680 (which shipped with a 256 m.2 sata). I replaced that with a 512GB m.2 pci/nvme from my other dell pc. It fits in the slot fine but the 5680's bios doesn't pick it up at all. Do I need to do something or is it simply not compatible with a pci/nvme m.2
Thanks

let me know if you get this to work, I'm waiting on my 5680 to arrive and have a NVME SSD to install in it as well

Cool that the Samsung 960 EVO NVMe M.2 2280 SSD worked!
NVMe was mentioned in the online Inspiron Gaming Desktop Setup and Specifications PDF found here.
Under Intel Optane Memory shows =
Under Storage Interface shows =
