Inspiron 5680, replacing power supply

So I would test our PSU with the added hardware before trying the Corsair HX650.

The site in which they sell the 5680 indicates support for upto a GTX 1070, the upgarding the a 1080 isn't allowed (or so the Sales rep told me).

It's a good PC, but I'm not sure why they went with a 460W PSU vs a minimal 500...

It depends on the graphics card really. The one Dell has are special variants that allow for the small PSU. Buying an aftermarket GPU from MSI or EVGA could be a lot bigger, or a lot smaller. 

If you pop the case open, you could squeeze it in, but then you can run the risk of having poor air flow. There really is no reason to upgrade to a 1080TI unless you really want those extra frames gaming at Ultra. And if you can afford that, you may aswell harvest the parts, and move to an NZXT case. 

That's a good point, 460W doesn't seem to leave a lot of room for error. Though it might work according to the person from Dell that posted the first reply. That could be good news. But a PSU is usually an easy replacement.

Either way, I'm more concerned about size. If I can't close the case, it's all over!!!

I too, recently purchased an Inspiron 5680-7163BLU-PLUS. I added 16GB's more RAM (totaling 32GB) and the 2.0TB HDD (Seagate Drive) from my old Dell XPS 8300. The Inspiron 5680 came with the 8GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Graphics Card. The Service Tag(S/N) . All the reviews I have read and watched indicate that the 460W PSU is barely adequate to support the 1070 Graphics Card. The 460W PSU seems to be more sufficiently suited for the 1050 and the 1060.

I took my Inspiron out for a spin, after installing FORZA HORIZON 3 (Std. Ed.). The PC started smelling like I was doing a burn-in test and as if it was giving off heat. Therefore, I'm certain that a Up-Grade >460W PSU is in order. Thus, my question is what is Dell's recommendation for a greater than 460W Up-Grade PSU? I do understand that 460W is just an overall rating and there are other rails (voltages/amps) to consider in the whole PSU Up-Grade scheme of things. This why I am seeking a "Dell" recommendation.

Part of the reason that I purchased the Insprion 5680 is because my (still in other uses) XPS 8700 did not have the adequate power required to play the new and current games. (FYI, I also returned a Dell XPS 8930 32GB because it was not compatible and less suited for my aspiring game playing pursuits).

I played battlefield 1 in ultra setting doesn't give me any bad thermal flow, smell ore throttle whatsoever.  The machines works great as intended. 

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, one thing I failed to mention in the first post, is that other than when I installed and played FORZA HORIZON 3 (Std. Ed.), I never had any indication that the 1070 graphics board or the 460W Power Supply was being taxed heavily, at all. Thus, I am still seeking a recommendation from a Dell rep. as to what would be an appropriate PSU  to purchase, even from them. I imagine the Inspirons and other Desktops PC's they configure/assemble with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 and 1090 have a more than 460W rating. So to err on the side of caution, I would still like to up-grade the PSU, bearing in mind that I have MAX'ed out the RAM (32GB) and installed an additional a 2TB HDD. I'm sure those additional items could have some impact on the Power Supply's ability to deliver a solid performance without being under strain. Please advise if there are any additional ideas.

noted, i too wanted the same thing. the sales rep mentioned there is no bigger PSU (yet) can suit the inspiron 5680. Still this website http://www.dell.com/ae/p/inspiron-5680-gaming-desktop/pd?ref=PD_OC indicate GTX1080 can be installed provided by dell...

So I know this is late but where could I find one of the OEM Gpu's you referenced? I have looked alover for a 1080 that could run with the 460w power supply and can't find any. Could I get a link? Thanks.

You do not need OEM card if you turn secure boot OFF and Legacy option roms ON.
