Inspiron 660

MS is just getting around to those nearing "end of service" models--meaning old computers. Be patient but one thing to check is  your Device Manager. Make sure you have the latest drivers. Dell does have windows 10 drivers for your model and some have 2020 dates. Check if you can use any of them here- https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/inspiron-660/drivers

My Inspiron 660 W10 v1909 still hasn’t been offered Windows 10 v2004 thru Windows Update. I recently updated my Dell’s Conexant audio driver from 8.50.8.0 to 8.50.12.0 (from Dell website). I found a 15-page thread on Microsoft’s forum concerning Conexant audio drivers causing Windows 10 v2004 install termination (link below). The Microsoft forum thread suggests several ways to get to v2004 by uninstalling or disabling Conexant audio drivers. Anyone have an opinion if my Conexant audio driver will end upgrade to v2004?

W10 v1909 support ends on May 11, 2021 (about 6-months). I was hoping Windows Update would do something by now; or Conexant, which was acquired by Synaptics ~ 2017 ; or Dell. I have some hard drive images; so if W10 v2004 upgrade fails, I will be able to get back to v1909. My other plan is to maybe switch to Ubuntu, I had a Linux box for about 6-years once.

I just checked Dell support webpage for audio drivers. This PC new was W7 in Dec 2012.

Conexant audio driver 8.50.8.0 (supported OS W7 64bit)

Conexant audio driver 8.50.12.0 (supported OS W8.1 64bit, W10 64bit)

Dec 2 - Dell 660 v1909 still not offered v2004. I had downloaded v2004 in October and put on DVD. Today (Dec 2) I thought I would try the upgrade with my DVD, 3 hours later had 2004 on the Dell 660. I tried many of my programs (Photoshop, Office Starter 2010 (Word, Excel), Dell Music Stage, Windows Media Player, W10 Mail, Google Chrome, Edge) everything seems to work OK. Dell is good for another year, maybe I'll try 20H2 around April 2021. Thanks for all who replied. 

This 660 was ordered from Dell website in Nov 2012 with Windows 7 OS. All partitions are still original sizes, has only had Window 10 Upgrades since Feb 2016, no clean installs. 

My Inspiron laptop is running Win 10 Pro v1909 but hasn't been offered either v2004 or 20H2 via Windows Update.

So I created a bootable USB with 20H2 last weekend and ran a clean install since the lappy's performance has been declining. The install went ok and I got as far as creating a PIN. When it started asking questions about my intended usage, the PC froze completely. Had to do a forced shutdown and it froze during the next boot.

Rebooted from the 20H2 ISO USB and ran the troubleshooter. It started working and after a few min it froze...

Fortunately, I'd imaged the HDD with Macrium right before the clean install so I booted up Macrium's recovery software from USB and re-imaged the HDD back to v1909 with all my software and personal files intact.

PC is running again, and not freezing like it did with 20H2. So I don't suspect the hardware, just some incompatibility between this hardware and 20H2, especially since chkdsk and Memtest 86+ run after reimaging the HDD didn't find any errors.

Here is some info for any other Inspiron 660 owners. My 8-year old Dell 660 still working great. I updated very few drivers on this PC before v2004 upgrade from v1909; and PC still has original W7 A05 Bios (did not update to A13 Bios). Did upgrade Conexant audio driver from 8.50.8.0 to 8.50.12.0.

Items below are currently shown in Windows Update / optional updates / Driver updates; but I don't plan on downloading / installing any since PC is working great. "If you have a specific problem, one of these drivers might help. Otherwise, automatic updates will keep your drivers up to date."

I later install the driver updates that were listed in Windows Update. These were the same ones that I saw listed on Dells website for my 660. It's been 8 days; and my Dell Inspiron 660 seems to be running OK with v2004.

you're gonna have to wait a while (about a month or two) until Microsoft actually lifts the 2004/20H2 upgrade blocks because of outdated Conexant audio drivers.

don't know if MS will lift the restrictions next week
