UPGRADE Inspiron 3881 graphic card to RTX 3060 up

Inspiron 3881

Inspiron 3881

Recently want to upgrade my inspiron 3881 with new graphic card (RTX 3060 up) and case power accordingly.

Questions:

1.Is it possible for the mother board (graphic card and power)?

2.Is it easy to DIY?

Thanks for answering a hardware newb~

JOcean captures the essence of what you need for the gpu upgrade.

just to add: you really need to consider improve air flow in the 3881 case when you install a high power gpu.  The case was not designed to handle a big heat load and has a meager exhaust fan to cool cpu only.  Stock psu has no provision to power a custom fan either.  Psu upgrade will give you means to power custom chassis fans. Without additional fan the gpu will be baked to dangerous temperatures in the case and cause component damage as well as performance throttling or system shut down.

3881 motherboard can work with 3060 or up if psu is powerful enough and there is sufficient cooling.  I suppose if you can not DIY custom fans, simply keep the case side panel open and position a desktop fan to blow cold air directly on the gpu will help cool it.

3881 case dimensions 154 mm (6.06 in.). You can install certain SFX 24/4 psu inside the case such as silverstone 500w SFX-L

Dimensions LxWxH 5.12 x 4.92 x 2.5 inches

The largest PSU that the 3881 came with is a 360W and the 3060 requires a 550W PSU. The 3060Ti requires a 600W PSU. But I suspect you already knew that. So no, that GPU will not work in your system without a PSU upgrade. This forum thread about a 3880 PSU upgrade may help with some pertinent information. Your PSU to MB connections are proprietary so you cannot just throw in another PSU without the adapter mentioned in that thread.

Thanks for the answer, I will look into that link.

I see. So its not as simple as I imagined. Since the price of RTX series went down, I thought it would be a real bargain to do the upgrade. Now It seems the  budget has to be  increased.

Thank for the info!

If you have Dell psu of 360w such as 8HKG7 360W Liteon Gold, it can support RTX 3060 and 3060 ti or 3070 based on psu calculator.  assuming i7-10700, 2x8 gb ddr4, nvme ssd only, load wattage for 3070 is 359w for typical real world scenario.

The 360w psu has a 6 pin PCIe connector which is effectively 8 pin because it has 3x12V wired.  Use a straight 6 to 8 pin adapter to make it 8 pin.

3060 and 3060 Ti and 3070 require

Supplementary Power Connectors 1x PCIe 8-pin
(adapter to 1x 12-pin included)

I am confused here. So psu dont necessarily has to meet the system power requirement? Which value

should be reffered to? And psu also need to support stronger fan right?

Nvidia psu requirement is often exaggerated in order to cover all possible configuration in pc.  For example Dell prebuilt pc such as XPS 8940 that has 3070 validated only has oem psu up to 500 w max.  According to Nvidia spec that would be below the required psu, but in reality not so.   Also Dell oem gpu is known to be lean without factory overclock or excessive cooling which cuts down energy consumption.
Online psu calculator gives more accurate estimate of typical real world load wattage. If you do not run benchmark test to stress your pc, the load wattage is the minimum psu you need.  of note anytime you introduce mechanical hdd or odd, psu estimate goes up.  In my barebones calculator estimate only nvme ssd is included.
