That's insane! Usually the hard drive is one of the easiest things to gain access to. I can just imagine someone literally destroying the laptop just to remove the hard drive before recycling the system or giving it away.
To the OP... If you plan on replacing the hard drive, I would upgrade to a SSD drive, which will preform faster and last longer.

It's a bit involved as this video describes. You have to pull the motherboard in order to replace the drive.

It's not easy - it requires removing the system board (the drive is attached to the underside).

Sometimes you have to rely on a repair professional, Just like having a late model car. Or buy a replacement.
