If it's that the AC adapter isn't recognized by the system, the battery will not charge, which could be the issue.

F2 at powerup to check the adapter status. If it shows unknown, see below (don't assume that just because it powers the system that the adapter is recognized, check it).

If the adapter is unrecognized, one of three things is wrong:  faulty adapter, faulty DC jack inside the system or faulty charge circuit. Try another OEM Dell adapter first. If it too is not recognized, replace the DC jack.

And if that fails to get the adapter recognized, the mainboard needs to be replaced.

Batteries only last about 2 years now so it could be failing or has failed. The computer will work on the adapter alone when the battery is removed. Try it to test. Make sure to turn the computer off at night. See this.

@ejn63

Thanks for your help.

I suspect it's the DC jack as I spend a lot of time in hotels and am prone to getting my foot tangled in the power cable and yanking it out. I ordered one anyway as it's only a few pounds (sorry I can't buy from the link as I'm in Scotland). I'll fit it over the weekend.

I tried F2 but couldn't see anything on adapters. The 130W AC battery is in perfect condition though. It charges just fine. I also run the Dell troubleshooter and it found nothing.

I find it strange though that it only happens when it's disconnected from the power overnight.

Thank you everyone who has helped me out here. I did what you all suggested and fitted the new DC Jack just now. It was easy to do. I left the laptop unplugged last night and this morning, it started without any issues. Time will tell if the problem comes back so will close the thread now.

Did you do a BIOS update recently on your Inspiron G3 17 3779? You are not alone. I started having this issue on my different model Inspiron 15 7577 the exact second that I finished the most recent BIOS update. In my opinion, this is a BIOS issue and don't let anyone tell you otherwise, unless your timing of it breaking is one in a million.

This is more or less a continuation and revision of this reddit post here.

I have figured out that since updating my BIOS on October 12 or 13, on every reboot my PC gives me a AC adapter unrecognized, battery will not charge warning. This has to be the BIOS update because it never happened before and apparently others with a different model Inspiron 15 5567 have had similar issues. Though I haven't found a solution. I'm taking huge performance hits, like my pc is being throttled as if it was not charged. I have also noticed my battery will not charge, it will say plugged in and not drain power, but it will not gain power while plugged in. Really stressed out. This is my only PC and I use it for work and leisure, my whole life is on this thing. Any help is greatly appreciated.

@hiiipowerbass

Hi. That`s a very interesting reply you`ve given. Thanks.

Yes, my BIOS would have been updated as a check all my drivers etc regularly and update as necessary.

@FifeFlyer

Check this out. Exact same BIOS update that messed my Inspiron 15 7577 up.

OK, looks like the problem is still there. And if I spend £50 on a new transformer and it`s BIOS problem, what then?

You moving the computer to one place to another place while AC adapter is plugged into the wall outlet ?

You plugging or unplugging the adapter quickly from the port ?

Keep in mind, the port where adapter is plugged into is very sensitive. It won't take much for you to see adapter error code. On my computers, I have to slowly plugged or unplugged my adapters from them. If I am in a rush, the adapter error code will come up every time.

Lastly, check if you are able see the status of adapter (130 W) in the BIOS. Check the battery to see if it's charging in BIOS as well.

New DC jack.

So that leaves the transformer or the BIOS.

BIOS seems to be last updated in May so may well be the transformer.
