Dell Inspiron 13 - both shift keys don't work
Hello, both of my shift keys currently do not work! I've had this issue in the past with my alt key, and dell representatives could not fix my problem and instead switched my keyboard. Now the problem is back - with both shift keys. They do occasionally work, maybe once every 20-30 strokes, but obviously this is not the solution.... The keyboard switch was almost exactly last year and now the problem is back, and the computer is less than two years old. Keyboard tester software says both shift keys work. As I am writing this, I am able to write uppercase letters using the shift keys, but a moment ago in both a google search, entering my dell password in this website, and in a word document I was not able to, and I tested this issue multiple times for the past few hours. Most of the time when I try to make uppercase letters, exclamation marks or change languages using alt+shift, the shift key does not do anything. I do see that this is an ongoing issue for some dell users. Please help!!

Hi Jt1369w1,
Thanks for posting. Apologies that your system is not performing as expected.
Your post does not indicate if you were able to perform a systems diagnostics on your computer. Please run Dell Support Assist, make a note of any error messages encountered, and post back. If no error messages are noted, then please try using an external keyboard. Does the issue still persist? How about using the on screen keyboard? Do you see the same using that?
Those tests will trouble shoot the hardware. If it's not a hardware issue, then disable all startup programs including the anti-virus and restart the computer. This does not uninstall anything, but will keep the applications from starting up when the computer is first turned on. This would indicate that the issue is possibly a software problem.
If the system is under warranty, please contact me privately. Be sure to include your personal information (name, address, telephone, email) and your computer's service tag number in your message. Thanks.
If there is no warranty, then you could contact our Out of Warranty team to get a quote for a paid service call -http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ

Hi, I’m having the exact same issue. It’s a Dell Inspiron 3531. An external keyboard and on screen keyboard do work on mine- so does this indicate that I need the main keyboard replaced or maybe even the motherboard? Could it possibly be a software issue? Thanks

i'm having the same issue! she stated she ran every test there was and the response from the dell tech didn't help one bit other than to offer to sell their services to fix something allot of people are obviously having an issue with! if anybody knows how to fix it, please share. This was my first dell laptop and what a disappointment!

Same issue here - a couple of months out of warranty.
Laptop passes all Dell checks yet Shift keys no longer work, I’ve updated BIOS, deleted drivers and reinstalled. Can get it working for 30 seconds only after reinstalling drivers then it goes again.
This seems to be such a common problem and the only option is to pay for an out of warranty service call - not going to happen.

Have the same problem, even after a full windows reset.. tried everything from the "ease of use" to drivers uninstall, language packages, Bios defaults, etc.
It's not a hardware issue since I was able to add a registry key that helped improve the response..but it's not consistent!!

Please try to run Dell PC checkup which would help you detect system's hardware issue. Follow the below mentioned steps to run the test:-
1. Click on start – type Dell Support Center – please click on it.
2. Click on PC checkup on the top right corner.
3. Click on custom test.
4. Run test on keyboard.
5. Press both the shift keys which are not working, in case if it fails to respond it needs to be replaced in case if your system is in warranty.

Hello I have the same problem with my Inspiron 5505!! the two shift buttons are behaving faulty. I thought initially it was a hardware issue, but when i pressed the two shift buttons simultaneously with the X, C, Z letters it shows the shortcut for for the Capslock or increasing the volume. which mean that it is functional but faulty behaving, i hope the DELL technical support become more concerned about this issue, as it affect the company reputation.

This is bizarre....!!! Reads like liquid was spilled on the keyboard and you have inherited that experience.
Why don't you post a video on Youtube or some other trustworthy source so that we can see your problem actually occurring in real-time...
