I just bought a new laptop (Dell Inspiron 15 3501) at Office Depot. (https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/2507673/Dell-Inspiron-15-3501-Laptop-156/)

and I found out that the DRAM frequency in CPU-Z is only 666MHz which is supposed to be 1333 or 1600 MHz (I know the DRAM frequency in CPU-Z is supposed to be doubled because of the double channels) while it is 2666 MHz in task manager and Hwinfo. so, if the ram speed in task manager is 2666MHz, the DRAM frequency in CPU-Z is supposed to be 1333MHz. If it is 3200MHz, the DRAM frequency in CPU-Z is supposed to be 1600MHz.

I have two questions.

1. Why is the ram speed in task manager & Hwinfo only 2666MHz, not 3200MHz? The RAM is SK Hynix DDR4-3200 and 11th gen Intel i7 for laptops should support DDR4-3200. (https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000007393/processors.html)

2. Why is the DRAM frequency in CPU-Z only 666MHz? not corresponding to the ram speed of 2666MHz in Task manager & Hwinfo

Me too have Dell Inspiron 3501 but have i5 1135g7 without external graphics card.

In case of inspiron 3501 without external graphics card, Dell has actually locked their default ram came preinstalled with the system till 2666. If you open back cover and see the deafult ram then you will see the print over ram frequency is stated as 3200Mhz but in actual when you use the same ram in system you will only get frequency upto 2666mhz. This is bcoz they have locked it only till frequency of 2666mhz. Now when you install another ram of 3200Mhz then both will work at 2666Mhz bcoz the default ram has locked till 2666Mhz only.

I too have this issue so i talked to dell executive and they told me you system is ordered with 2666mhz ram (you can check on dell.com/support and input your service code and check specs of system) so even the default ram frequency is 3200mhz printed on ram there, but they are locked to use only upto 2666mhz. They told that if i install another ram of 3200mhz in place of that default ram then i will be able to use 3200mhz instead of 2666mhz.

CPUz has some issue with DRAM values in 11th gen processor. I have watched Dell inspiron 5402 with 3200Mhz default ram. In cpuz DRAM is showing as 800mhz instead of 1600mhz. CPUZ is showing half of the half in 11th gen processors. So there may be a bug. You can see Task manager, bios, Hwinfo all those are showing dram around 1333 and changing. So that is a true value.

Thank you for the reply. Have you tried another ram of 3200mhz in place of the default ram of 2666mhz?

Oh I see thank you for your answer again.

Yes I did feel heating while running. I think it's a decent budget model so it seems acceptable to me. What do you think of the heating?

No, I have not tried.

Using dual channel ram but frequency of second memory i bought was 2666mhz. Using 3200mhz memory has its advantage more towards iris xe graphics (as it will increase its bandwidth). Even if i will change my default ram with another ram then I have to keep my default ram very safe bcoz at the time of warrenty claim dell will ask for original ram (this is the reason i have not changed my default ram and my extended warrenty is upto 3 years ).

Do you felt heating while using it?????

Yes there is heating issue in my opinion. Temps for CPU are under 60C under normal uses (browsing, office and general tasks) but even below 60C temp the bottom of laptop felt too much heated. They have also preinstalled thermal sensor for skin and DIMM slot too. These temps wont damage motherboard but this laptop is definitely not for to use on the lap. Also the design of vent is so bad. The screen restricts the air flow.

But i can tolerate that bcoz the base clock is set at max i.e for 1135g7 base clock is 2.4Ghz (So not to worry for the performance). Also every Dell Inspiron 3000 series has set their base clock at max of the processor. For your i7 1165g7 also the base clock will be at max (i.e 2.8Ghz).

But for the system right now having Dell inspiron 5000 series I dont know why Dell has reduced their base clock (than what processor can support at max). For ex Dell Inspiron 5402, 5502, 5509 having i5 1135g7 processor have base clock only 1.4Ghz (Inpiron 3501 have 2.4Ghz). Even some Inspiron 7000 series have lowered their base clock speeds like Dell Inspiron 7306 (base clock only 1.7ghz instead of 2.8ghz). But some of Dell 7000 series like Dell Inspiron 7506 have base clock set to max i.e. 2.8Ghz.

In my opinion they have lowered their base clock because it will produce less heat and Dell has also advertised their laptops with adaptive thermal and can be used on lap.
