G-key (Fn+F7) feature on Dell G7 7590 (quick switching between Alienware Command Center profiles)

Hi

Has anybody tried enabling the "G-key" (Fn+F7) on a 2019 Dell G5 or G7 (to quickly switch between thermal profiles and Windows power plans) as described at

https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln317311/dell-g5-5590-g7-7590-7790-enables-g-key-feature-with-latest-bios-alienware-command-center-and-alienware-oc-controls?lang=en

?

If so, how does it work for you?

What I observe is that pressing Fn+F7 switches the hardware thermal profile back and forth between “Optimized” and “Ultra Performance” (as expected), but the Windows power plan remains set to “High Performance” once game-mode has been enabled once (which is a problem)...

I contacted Dell support who acknowledged that the feature is not working as intended on my machine but could allegedly not reproduce the problem in-house.

Has anybody else tried that feature? Is it working for you? Thanks!

I did some testing with my G3. After using the game shift key (f7), the fans go to full speed and my power plan in Control Panel switches to high performance no matter which one is selected beforehand. Also, the thermal setting in Dell Power Manager switches to Ultra Mode no matter which other plan was selected beforehand. This is good!

After pressing the game shift key (f7) once more, the fans go back to their normal speed and quiet state. The thermal setting in Dell Power Manager returns to the previous setting. However, the power plan in Control Panel stays on high performance. I can, however, manually select a power plan.

So I seem to have the issue you described as well. (Assuming this is not intended behavior)

@JoyfulJourneys Thank you for your note. Did you report the issue to Dell? To the best of my knowledge the G-key issue will only be investigated further if others report the problem...

What kind of laptop specs do you have? I bought my 7790 with i7 9750h, rtx2060 and a 512gb NVME in September and it didn’t come with a G key at all. I’ve been back and forth with tech support for a month because they are trying to tell me it’s an option you can choose. BS

The G-key is not a physical key. You need to press both the Fn and F7 keys at the same time...

Also, on the G7 7590 it requires a recent BIOS. If your 7790 does not have the latest BIOS you might want to update it.

i'm on dell g5 5590

i can only toggle those G-mode while pressing f7 in alienware command center interface

fn+f7 is useless if the AWCC is closed.

maybe because your cpu temperature is already low enough, fan will stop if the workload is not stress in ultra performance profile.

i have same issues, FN +F7 KEY does not turn on the preformance mode "boost"

but the only way the fn+f7 key activates supper boost mode is if the program (ACS) is turned on.
I installed the OSD Kits from alienware on the store, and it works now. let me know if it works for you.
