G15 5520, MUX switch via BIOS update please?

Hi,

I read that last years G15 got a BIOS update to enable MUX switch to turn off the integrated graphics. So I order a G15 5520 on Friday with the 3070 and Intel 12th Gen. I discovered today, that the current model doesn’t have the MUX switch option in the BIOS? I had assumed since it was added in the 2021 version would be in all future editions. Instead of cancelling my order, I was hoping if some at DELL could confirm the option will come via BIOS update in the future, like the last version?

Thanks you.

No one will confirm that option will be added later.  If you want a guarantee, cancel the order and buy an Alienware 15 system that has the support you're looking for.

Some of the G15 systems (Ryzen based) did get the option of firmware selectable graphics -- the Intel based ones did not (at least the did not universally receive the option).

hmm okay. I’ll have a think about what I’m going to do then. The Alienwares are too expensive. I’ll have a look around. Thanks.

Hi @Alter1 thank you for sharing purchase dilemma.

There are Alienware laptops that enable Hybrid Graphics Switching/Advanced Optimus in the BIOS menu. Essential BIOS 1.3.0 update for Alienware x15 and x17 owners now available to boost performance and enable hybrid graphics switching - NotebookCheck.net News

Not sure what has been ordered, is it the Dell G15 5521 Special Edition | Overview | Dell US, as advertised Dell Gaming Laptops: G-series | Dell USA

Alter1,

Your G15 5520 shipped on May 23, 2022. I see on the G15 5520 drivers page that BIOS 1.6.5 was released on May 30, 2022. Have you installed BIOS 1.6.5?

Are you saying that you entered the BIOS, went to Display, and did not see the, "Hybrid Graphics / Advanced Optimus" setting?

I'm getting a similar issue on my G15 5521. When I go on to a game like Jedi Fallen Order, usually the GeForce Experience app would notify me that the current setting is switched to NVIDIA GPU only. But now it says that it can't change display settings. Now I am stuck with an Iris Xe graphics bottleneck I am supposed to be able to get rid of, but I can't disable it automatically using the GeForce experience app when I open a game. And when I disable it manually without restarting the entire thing, the settings I had for the display go to default. Can I find a way to fix this please?

Edit: I've found a solution to my problem and it might fix yours. Go to the Nvidia Control Panel, Select 3D settings and select manage 3D settings and select the preferred graphics processor to Auto-Select and then click Apply. This should now automatically change graphics when you open games and say which GPU is selected for the display in notifications unless you have notifications on GeForce experience disabled.

@DELL-Chris M Hi,

I did this, I set to off Hybrid Graphics and now my laptop dont display video. I connected an external monitor to use. I'am in contact with support, but no resolution yet.

Problem solved!

Update your BIOS to the latest version, then install the Nvidia 526.98 driver, disable optimus in the bios and be happy.

You need to reset the bios.

Last time I checked, the hybrid graphics (advanced Optimus) for the g15 are only available for the special edition (5521/5520) that features the 1440p@240hz 15 inch displays which are found in last gen Alienware laptops (such as the X15r2). For other display options which are 1080p@120/165hz, they still have a mux switch which can change which GPU drives the display through a restart and possibly a dig into bios as the computer reboots.
