G3 15 (3579) Adding an SSD

Hi,

I am in the market for a new laptop and my eye caught the G3 15 3579 advertised on this page.

The model includes a M.2 NVMe SSD of 256GB, which is a little too small for me. Since I have a spare 2.5" SATA SSD of 500GB, I was wondering whether it is possible to add my own SSD to it.

I have seen another configuration (here) of the same model that includes a 128GB M.2 SSD and a 1TB 2.5" SATA HDD, which I of course can swap out as well. However, since I do not plan on using the HDD anyway, it seems to be a bit of a waste to spend some extra money on something I will remove. Furthermore, I would much rather go for a 256GB+500GB rather than a 128GB+500GB.

So bottom line is: is it possible with this model to add my own SSD?

Best regards

There's 1 SATA and 1 PCIE connection on this motherboard. You can do whatever you want with them.

You can swap out the 2.5 HDD and replace it with SSD sure :/ if you want to ask about that

Well yea replacing is possible with the configuration that actually contains the HDD. My question, however, is whether it is possible to add my spare SSD to the model without the HDD.

Would adding second the ssd to empty SATA slot require any software installation or is it just open the back plug in the ssd and you are good to go?

No, not if you're using it as a storage drive.

Hello !

I've just bought a G3-15 (3579).

There is a catch and a warning here...

On the main board there are one connector for a SATA 2.5" HDD and a connector for an M.2 NMVE (and SATA ? ) disk.

But the catch is that :

For fitting the HDD you need a bezel to hold the drive and the cable to connect the drive to the MB. As far as I know, if the model do not come with a HDD you miss both the bezel and the cable. I do not know which P/N to order from Dell.

For the NVME M.2 SSD, there is a bezel to hold and lock the card on it's connector. This bezel only comes (to my knowledge) with models sold with an M.2 SSD. Bear in mind that on my particular computer, the M.2 fitted is a Western Digital 2230 card and the bezel is adapted to hold ONLY this card ! So if I plan to change the M.2 for, say, an 2242 or 2280, I can't because I will have no way to hold the card on the system... Also, I do not know which P/N to order from Dell to hold a "standard" 2230 SSD M.2 or A 2242, or 2280...

Just my 2 ¢ and YMMV .....

The G3 3579 I got for Christmas does have the SATA 2.5" bracket and cable. I just tried putting a 1TB drive in and Windows would not boot with it attached. I tried turning off RAID in the BIOS but that didn't help. The drive was formatted on another Windows 10 pc.

Anyone have any idea?

I got the 3590 and a 500gb m.2 fitted, tried adding on a crucial 1tb ssd but it won't start with the mains plugged in, only on the battery power. It shuts down after about 10min, so I'm thinking the power consumption is slightly different with the laptop and the Crucial ssd. There was an additional issue with the drive not named correctly, but there was a few videos online to address this issue, search renaming secondary ssd/hdd.

Hi, I want to add an SSD on SATA 2.5 inch, but when I open my laptop, I have no tray and cable on it. My model is G3 15 3579. I don't know what tray and cable to fit with this model, can you help me?
