Horizontal lines appearing on my display (Ubuntu)

While working with my DELL XPS 13 laptop (shipped with Ubuntu), sometimes colored horizontal lines appear (I cannot recreate the beahvior, it seems random). I tried attaching an external monitor to see if the behavior pesists on the other monitor: nevertheless, it seems these lines don't appear anymore even on my laptop when an external monitor is attached.

I tried running a quick diagnostic test and no issue was found.

Any hint? See photo.

PC model:
Dell XPS 13 9320
OS: Ubuntu 22.04
Processor: 12th Gen Intel Core i7 1260Px16
RAM: 32 GB
Graphic: MESA Intel Graphics (ADL GT2)

Don't put attention on the info you see in the photo: they concern another post I was looking at, not my computer. I could take the photo in that moment as the issue suddenly appeared.

Update: I managed to get my ticket escalated with Dell technical support and the next tier has been quite helpful. They say Dell engineering has opened a ticket with Canonical and they are working on a fix. In the meantime, they suggested adding the parameter i915.enable_psr=0 to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT string in /etc/ default /grub, so (at least on my machine), the relevant line becomes

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i915.enable_psr=0"

I made this change, ran sudo update-grub, rebooted into the 5.19 kernel, and I don 't have the video artifacts anymore.

Hello,

XPS 9320 contains a bist (Build in self test) have a look at this manual expand troubleshooting => build in self test if there is a problem the battery led will start to flash in amber in that case you need to replace the system board.

Press and hold both the m key and the power button while device is turned off.

It seems there is no issue. I do not think it's a hardware issue, all diagnostic tests are fine.

I have exactly the same issue after the latest update. Dell XPS 13 with Ubuntu 22.04 preinstalled. The lines appear if I move the mouse cursor slowly.

I saw at least two questions regarding this issue on askUbuntu. It doesn't look like a hardware problem, because several people got this problem almost simultaneously 2 days ago after Ubuntu update. And the lines are in the same place (see the photo below)!

can you share the two askubuntu posts? One of them is mine for sure, but I would like to comment the other one.

I agree, I think I noticed this issue during last weekend.

I switched back to a factory version of Ubuntu 20, but with the software updates the issue is still present. Interestingly enough, before updating Ubuntu 20 with
` sudo apt update `
I didn't have the issue.

Just going through /var/log/apt/history.log at around the time the problem started, here are some of the packages that I suspect might be related. Would any of you add to or subtract from this list?

Yes, my list of the updated packages is very similar, I can see the exact same packages in /var/log/apt/history.log. I installed all suggested updates this Monday (20th Feb).

I am going to get in touch with Dell support (since I have Pro-Support Plus coming with my laptop). Let's see what they say.

One small update: booting from kernel version 5.15.0 via the "Advanced options for Ubuntu" option in GRUB seems to prevent the problem (see this thread), so I think we can probably zero in on the kernel updates above. On my machine, the GRUB menu doesn't appear at boot time by default, but it's there if you hold down ESC at the right moment in the boot cycle.

Thank you @tcquinn, I have just tried to boot from 5.15 and it worked, no lines at all!

Restarted and booted from default 5.19.0 and got the lines again.

That's a very interesting solution @Anonymous

Can you please update the link?

We found a workaround (see the new posts), but not a long-term solution. Update us when you hear from DELL.

Also in my case, downgrading to Kernel version 5.15 solves the issue. This cannot be a long-term fix though. We should hear from DELL support.
