Inspiron 13 5378 shuts down when idle
When running on battery only (e.g. AC adapter NOT plugged in), the laptop complete shuts down when left idle for 5 minutes or more. I have checked the BIOS and the power settings. According to the system, the screen should shut off after 5 minutes and the system should go to sleep after 15 minutes - NOT perform a complete shutdown.
I also checked the battery health using the diagnostic tools and everything checks out as normal. I figured that this was the case as the unit runs just fine for a couple of hours so long as I am actively using it. Also checked the power plan settings. There is nothing out of the ordinary.
Screen: turn off after 5 minutes on battery / 10 minutes when plugged in
Sleep: sleep after 15 minutes on battery / 30 minutes when plugged in
Dell Power Plan makes no mention of shutdown.
Also checked the setting for Intel(R) Management Engine Interface. It is NOT set to allow the computer to turn off the device to save power.
Specifics on the unit are as follows: Inspiron 13 5378 / 8 GB memory (upgraded to 16) / 1 TB HDD / Windows 10 service pack 1809 (all updates are current).
Any insight would be great. It's frustrating to have to reboot all the time not to mention losing work in process.

If you haven't tried this--Turn off Hybrid Sleep and Hibernation in the Advanced Settings of your Plan. Hibernation shuts the computer down and keeps the current settings but requires a brief press of the power button to wake it.
If your battery is the original one and over 1-2 years old, it could be wearing down.

Thanks so much for the quick response Mary.
I checked the advanced setting in the power plan. As expected Sleep After is 15 minutes for battery and 30 minutes for plugged in. Hybrid Sleep already set off for both battery and plugged in. I set Hibernate after off. This had no effect (e.g. system still went into full shutdown after 5 minutes of inactivity).
While I appreciate the advice on the possible battery issue, I am skeptical that the battery is failing as I'm able to perform several hours of full out computing with no problem. It seems to me that the system would deplete quickly and shut down (while in use) due to lack of power. As noted, the battery has a full charge when I am performing this testing.

One more thing....
The shut down ONLY happens under the following conditions:
Computer is left ON
Screen is OPEN
System is idle (e.g. mouse/touchpad/keyboard not used for 5 minutes)
If I close the screen, the system goes into sleep mode as normal. Pursuit to the settings, I would expect the screen to power off after 5 minutes (system remains on) and the laptop to go to sleep 10 minutes after that (15 minutes idle).

I'm facing exactly the same problem with my Inspiron 13 7375 2-in-1 Ryzen 2500U laptop. I've purchased this laptop in Nov'18.
My power setting are similar to what pjmatarese has described.
In my case, when laptop is On battery and remains idle, it looks as if it has gone to sleep. However, any input from keyboard, touchpad or mouse does not wake it up. When I quick press the power button, keyboard light turns on but the display doesn't come up. Same happens when I close the lid and reopen. After a few seconds, even the keyboard light turns off. And after that when I press the power button again, laptop starts similar to starting after a complete shut down. I lose all my open apps and windows.
I read thru' a lot of tech community websites, blogs etc. and tried different suggested solutions, but nothing has solved my problem so far. I'm desperately looking for a solution. Thanks.

As expected Sleep After is 15 minutes for battery and 30 minutes for plugged in 9 apps. Hybrid Sleep already set off for both battery and plugged in. I set Hibernate after off. This had no effect (e.g. system still went into full shutdown after 5 minutes of inactivity).

I have Inspiron 7570 - exact same problem as you described. If I leave my computer untouched for a couple of minutes it just shuts off - not hibernate, not sleeping, just off. It will not let me turn it on immediately. I have to wait a couple of minutes. All of my power settings are suppose to let it stay on much longer whether on battery or plugged in. I have replaced the battery, thinking that might be the problem but it still does this. It is NOT getting overheated because it will do it after I first turn it on and I have a SSD which produces very little heat.

I have the same problem with my Inspiron 13 5000 series, turning itself off when idle. Very frustrating. It started last month, when just a year old. I find to persuade it to restart I need to shut the lid, unplug the mains lead, wait a few minutes, then open the lid and press the power on button (briefly).

I have the Inspiration 13 7352 since 2015. I had the same exact issue everyone was having since I first bought the computer. I had it checked out at best buy multiple times and nothing solved the issue. I have had the computer for 4 1/2 years and till this day it still does that problem. Has anyone got a resolution or has Dell described a solution? It is my first laptop, and I am disappointing and frustrated it "hard shuts" all the time. @Anonymous

I have an Inspiron 14 5000 and I have just started experiencing these problems (exactly as described above - unplugged, idle for 5 minutes while I am doing something else, have to go through the start procedure and reload all my applications if I step away from my computer for even a moment). Purchased the laptop refurbished about a month ago and now due to all of the coronavirus issues having my computer on me is a necessity for schoolwork at my university. I would be shocked if this was a battery issue as this laptop was just purchased recently and has no other signs of hardware or battery issues. This seems to be a common design flaw across different devices and it's pretty sad that no one from Dell has replied to this thread with a legitimate solution or explanation. Would really like some support here as this is seriously hindering my work.
Thank you.

This has now happened when plugged in and closed. Honestly ridiculous no one from dell support has replied with a legitimate solution for any of these questions.
