Inspiron 5558 Blank screen on startup

Hi

I recently got this message while running ePSA diagnostic test on my Dell Inspiron 5558

Hard Drive 0 - S/N 75ROT4I2T short self test unsuccessful. Error code: 2000-0142 Validation 98091

Now the laptop won't startup. When I press the power button the Dell logo shows up followed by a blank screen. I have tried pressing F2/ F12 keys to get the boot menu but nothing shows up. It's just a blank screen.

Is this caused by hard disk crashing or failure.. If so what should I do?

Please help!

@Shahnawaz232

Using the Service Tag number which you should not have posted , a search on Dell.com indicates that your laptop is no longer under warranty.

So,

1. buy a SSD

2. buy a SATA-to-USB adapter

3. download Service Manual

4. remove the old hard drive

5. install new SSD

6. download and install Media Creation Tool on working PC

7. use MCT to create USB for installing Windows 10 on another PC

8. install Windows 10.

9. connect to router using Ethernet cable

10. get all Windows 10 updates

11.  connect old hard drive using SATA-to-USB cable to retrieve your files

.

Error code 2000-0142 means hard drive is failing or has failed.

You can exercise the computer warranty by contacting Dell Technical Support in link below and request Dell to service the computer for free or ask for a free replacement hard drive and install it yourself.

Any updates Shahnawaz232 ? The computer is up and running again? You replace the failing hard drive with a new one ?

No, not yet.. There is a lockdown due to COVID-19.. So I have to wait.

Is it ok to replace a hard drive with an SSD? Can I do that on my own or do I need some professional for it? Also how do I know which SSD is compatible with my laptop? And do I need to change any settings in bios?

Yes, you could replace the faulty hard drive with a new solid state drive. First, go back and read nyc10036 post as he make an excellent assessment about installing a new SSD and reinstalling windows.

Now, if you going to replace the faulty hard drive, you should read Service Manual thoroughly before attempting to open the base cover. If you are handy with tools then this job should be easy one for you to do. Remove battery, base cover and then 4 screws that secure the hard-drive assembly, easy, easy, easy!

Crucial Memory & SSD com is the best website to purchase a solid state drive. Most people, here on this forum, will recommend the same. Just select computer, Dell, enter model number( Inspiron 55580) onto the link below.

Also go to top of Crucial web page, select Support and then SSD Easy Install Guide. By the way, Crucial warranty their solid state drive, I believe 5 years.

" And do I need to change any settings in bios? "

----------------------

Lastly,....

No need to change anything in the BIOS, just boot into Dell Preboot menu by taping F12 key .

1. Insert the windows 10 recovery media into a USB port, power off system.

2. Power computer on, quickly start tapping F12 key continuously until you see Preparing One time Boot Menu in the top right corner of the screen.

3. At Dell Preboot menu, select windows 10 recover media under UEFI BOOT.

You will need:

Download Windows 10 - microsoft.com
