Inspiron auto brightness adjust

Hi,

This is the third time I've tried to post this, but it didn't seem to work.  Apologies if it's duplicated.

Is there a fix to disable the stupid auto brightness adjust (CABC) 'feature' yet?  I've spent hours trying to fix this before finding the posts on here saying what is even causing it.  Inspiron 15 7000 Series -7570.

On a ranting note, I've used Dells for my whole career and am completely astounded at the stupidity of this latest design.  I've spent £1200 and ended up with a laptop that doesn't fit any of the Dell chargers I already have, has a keyboard that is missing keys by design, a touchpad that is borderline unusable and a display that is hugely irritating.  Thanks Dell.

The new BIOS update released yesterday, version 1.10.0, adds an option under Video to disable this feature.

Hi Nickname643534,

Thanks for posting.  Apologies that your system is not performing as expected.

The automatic brightness control should be located in the Dell Intelligent Display which is sometimes located in the Battery Management window.

Here is some information from the Dell knowledge base you may find helpful:

Dell Inspiron 15 (7570) Usage and Troubleshooting Guide

Disable adaptive brightness to correct dim screen on a Windows 8 or Windows 10 portable device

Hi dell-robert p, thanks for replying.

I have looked in the Dell Extended Battery Life window found under the battery icon on the task bar and there are no options to change.  There are a couple of tick boxes that seem to mess around with the power management options, but nothing I can change.  I have tried booting with safe mode turned off as it was suggested that this displayed further options, but nothing is different.

I have looked in 'power' on the Intel Graphics Control panel and there is very little to change.  Nothing for brightness control.

I have turned off 'Enable adaptive brightness' under display for both plugged in and on battery in the advanced power settings.  Both were already turned off, but toggling them makes no sense.

All settings -> system -> display does not have an option for adaptive brightness.

I think I have covered everything that I've looked at.  If you have any further suggestions I will be happy to try them, but this does not seem to be an isolated thing.  A quick search for adaptive brightness on your forum turns up a few threads all asking the same thing, although the last was a couple of months ago. This for example

Is there a fix, or a fix in the works to allow this to be turned off?

Were you able to try opening the Intel Graphics control panel UI > Power and deactivate Display Power Saving Technology under Battery mode?

Hi dell-robert p,

If this is where you mean, there are no options to make any difference.

@Nickname643534 any tip or trick that @robert p mentions will not work.

This is a feature called "CABC". Dell does not advertise this feature anywhere but you get to find out about it after buying the laptop after which you have no recourse except to hope that dell releases a fix for it. This same feature exists in the XPS line for which they have released a fix. They haven't yet for this laptop, nor there is any communication that they plan to. When I contacted dell I was told that it's working "as designed" and basically to deal with it. I own the 7373 and facing the same issue. Some other poor souls going over the same issue

If you are in a location where they allow returning the laptop, do it before the 30 days from purchase date window closes.

Hi @Aniessh Sethh,

I think I saw some of your responses in other posts but hadn't seen an update on it for a month or so.  I hoped that there might have been some development from DELL since then.

What is even more annoying is that I updated the Intel graphics driver today to solve a different problem (100% GPU spikes causing pauses) and now the CABC works differently.  Before the brightness change was gradual and less noticeable, but after the update it just steps the brightness when it is changed.  Obviously there is some control available so why not let us turn it off?!

Argh!

All technology seems to be getting worse these days, every upgrade or new device provides more problems than improvements.  Or maybe I'm just becoming a grumpy old man!

Were you able to find this setting in the "Settings" tool?  If so, is it not working for you?

April 23rd, 2018 04:00

Yes, as I said in my second post, both of those options are set to off.  I did make a typo though, changing them makes no difference to what I am observing.

The exact same problem is there for Dell 7570. I have been looking for a solution as it causes eyestrain and distraction during work. Please escalate the issue so that we can have a fix. No doubt Intel DPST and Dell's CABC are very good innovations, but we should be allowed to choose whether we want to use them or not.

See my post, not sure if it'll work for other Inspiron models, but try at your own risk
