Mute Toggling On and Off

Hello! Please let me know if this post is in the wrong location or anything.

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 7567 laptop and in the year or so that I've had it I've occasionally bumped the mute button (tied to the F1 key) on accident, and so I press it again to unmute. For example I have tried to use Fn-F1 for an alternative function but don't time it right, so it mutes. When I hit the button again, about a third of the time maybe it rapidly mutes and unmutes without me being able to stop it. I can change it, but it still rapidly changes again which, obviously is bad for anything when you're listening to any sound. Usually the only fix is to restart the computer entirely. 

Does anyone know why this happens, or if there's a fix? I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, and have removed smartbyte, but no luck with either.
