My Keypad number 2 and 8 keys not working
On my number keypad on my Inspiron 17 5000 series, the numbers 2 and 8 keys primarily do not work - they will intermittently work, but I haven't figured out why. I have searched for hours, tried all the fixes I have found; turning off the mouse keys, deleting the keyboard drivers - reinstalling, etc... The num lock is on, as the other numbers work fine as do all the other keys on the keyboard - it is just the 8 and 2 keys.

the keys have failed mechanically
you'll need to replace them or use an external keyboard

I am having this same problem. "2", "8" and also "*" keys not working on num pad. They do however starting working again after some time passes. Like 10-20 minutes.
Is there a startup program that's interfering with the driver?

Same problem. 2 & 8 key on keypad, not on line number keys. Dell Inspiron 5593
"Best driver" installed.
Removed key caps and cleaned. Still fail intermittently.
Tried turning off start up programs.
Still no luck. Hope someone figures this out!

Almost always a hardware problem.

Neither 2 nor 8 was working on my keypad.
I just ran Dell diagnostics online and
ran keyboard check and all keys passed.
Now the 2 & 8 seem to be working fine.
time will tell

Seems to indicate it's not dirt under the keys, though I have no clue how running diagnostics might fix it?

I pressed on Num lock for 5 seconds, and a message appeared, then pressed ok now it's working.

Please uninstall the keyboard in device manager. Follow the steps below.
Start > in search box type in device manager > in device manager page under the keyboard > select the device right click on it and click on uninstall > you will get a popup window do not check that box click ok> restart the computer and check if the issue persists.
In addition clean the keyboard using the can of compressed air, also try connecting an external keyboard and check if the issue reoccurs.

Same problem here, Inspiron 17 5000. Sometimes it start working for a while, even if I did not restart my laptop. Sometime I think it works if I longer press the 8 or 2, but then it comes back again later. Did someone find any solution for this annoying problem? Thanks so much for sharing.
