SMB Windows Offline Files / CSC
I am running into problems migrating our current Windows Server 2012r2 based home-directory share with active Offline Files / CSC functionality to Isilon.
Symptoms: The data migration and basic share access works flawless - just like any other SMB share on Isilon so far. The share/folder is also recognized as available for offline use and the sync can be started from Windows Sync Center. Unfortunately, the sync takes ages to initialize/run and often fails, but strangely not all the time. So I assume that in the very base CSC seems to be working on our Isilon cluster, but at least some part of the deeper configuration must be wrong...
Unfortunately, information on what configuration steps are needed to offline files working on OneFS is a bit sparse.
What I did try is changing the csc-policy on the share from "manual" to "programs", but that did not help or change anything as it seems.
To make sure that the error is not on the client side, I spun up a new Windows Server VM (WinServer 2019), copied some of the Home-directories using the same robocopy script/switches, created the share and activated offline files on the share with the same settings as the Isilon csc-policies "manual" and "programs" represent. No problems whatsoever syncing for any client that I tested with... Client computers are Windows 10 only (so no Vista, Win7, Win8, etc...).
Google returns some rather "heavy" optimization options in the SAMBA domain that seem to be a bit off with regards to Isilon. I suppose things like changing file/directory create mask defaults or specific Windows client registry settings to optimize date modified handles between Windows and Unix is not quite "how-to-do-things-on-Isilon"...
Anybody with a bit of insight as to what needs to be taken into account when using Windows/SMB offline files/CSC/client-side-caching functionality with Isilon? The document "Dell EMC PowerScale: Solution Design and
Considerations for SMB Environments" does not contain any information on this subject...
Thanks a lot in advance!
