Same node model, different capacity

Simple question: Can you add a node to a cluster of the same model but of a different capacity? i.e., adding another x210 node with 2 TB drives to a cluster of x210 with 1TB drives

Thanks for the response however just to clarify, does the above apply even when the nodes are the same generation? We'd be adding an extra x210 node to an x210 cluster.

johnwick,

In short No; Here is the documentation on supportability and compatibility between nodes.

(Note this will require login)

https://support.emc.com/docu44518_Isilon_Supportability_and_Compatibility_Guide.pdf?language=en_US

It states on page 33:
"Compatible node generations must have identical HDD and SSD layouts and must

have a compatible memory configuration."

johnwick,

Over all I'm making the assumption you are attempting to simply add a single X210 with different drive capacity. If this is correct then. Yes, the capacity (drive size and configuration) of the nodes must match.

If you are planning on adding 3 or more nodes with 2TB drives then you can add them without issue's they will just create a new node pool.

sluetze,

You are correct, I mentioned the incorrect thing it should read node pool, I did correct it as well. Thanks for the heads up!

HI there ,,,

I am not sure if I should create news post .(Let me know if I should .. )

I have exactly same case with A200 . Adding A200 Nodes to Existing A200 Nodes .. but they are different Disk size .Would this be the same case ?  `` capacity (drive size and configuration) of the nodes must match``

I have checked https://support.emc.com/docu44518_PowerScale-Supportability-and-Compatibility-Guide.pdf?language=en_US but it does not mention A200.

thanks !

Same principle applies...

thanks for the quick reply !

So even Node compatibility simplification has been added Onefs8.2.2 , RAM can be mixed but not in the disk size ?

( ref:Home/OneFS Web Administration Guide /Storage pools /Node pools /Compatibilities)

To enable the new node to be provisioned into the existing X410 node pool, you must add the new X410 node type to the existing X410 node pool.

Use the isi storagepool nodetypes list command to view the node types and their IDs, then isi storagepool nodepools modify --add-node-type-ids=  to add the new node type to the existing node pool.

For example, suppose that your x410 nodepool name is x410_nodepool and isi storagepool nodetypes list shows the node type ID as 12:

isi storagepool nodepools modify x410_nodepool --add-node-type-ids=12)

If that is the case ... it would be different Node pool created if add A200 (4TB x 4) node to A200 (8TBx4) ?

@ayas

Correct, different nodepool if HDD size is different.
