Using Isilon HDDs across different OneFS Versions

Hello Guys

I have an EMC Isilon with OneFS v7.x.x in my environment and I am looking to
also setup a cluster of OneFS v8.x.x.
Correct me if I am wrong;

1. I can remove the HDDs in my v7 and insert them my v8 without any problems.
I just need to add and format the HDDs.

2. It is not necessary to upgrade the HDD firmware in order to use them in v8.

3. Is it possible to also format and use HDDs in v8 in a node with a lesser OneFS version like v7.

In a nutshell, I am trying to find out if I can use same HDDs across two different versions of OnefS
(v7 and v8 in my case).

Thank you.

Hello jessieobioma,

  1. Which Isilon systems do you have? In most cases you should be able too, but it depends on the systems that you have.
  2. No, it is not necessary, but it is recommended that you upgrade the firmware of the drives if they need to be upgraded.
  3. This depends on the Isilon systems.

Hello DELL-Sam L,

Thank you for responding to my post!

The systems I have in my environment are EMC Isilon X200 (3 node-cluster running OneFs v7)

and I am looking to add the same X200 (but with Onefs v8 this time).

Is it safe to assume that because they are both the same systems, I can use their HDDs interchangeably?

What if it is an environment with S200 and X200 or X200 and X210, is it still possible?

Thank you.

Hello jessieobioma,

Here is a link to the Isilon Supportability and Compatibility Guide, which list out which systems are supported and which oneFS versions are supported as well.

Thank you Sam for responding.

I have a different question this time.

The isi_gather_info log collection runs successfully.

However, there is no information in the manuals on how to

copy the log from /ifs/data/Isilon_Support/pkg to a PC or any other location via CLI.

I tired the "cp" command but could not copy the log.

What is the right command to achieve this in the different OneFS versions?

Thank you.

@jessieobioma
use winscp to copy the logs to your pc or scp to copy to another linux host
