2.5 GB RAM on Dell Inspiron 9400?

I used to have 1GB (2x512MB) RAM.  I recently purchased a 2GB stick and installed it in the A slot, leaving the 512MB stick in the B slot.  I am currently at BIOS version A10.  I ran the Belarc analysis and the report shows 2GB in slot A but empty in slot B.  I am running Window XP Pro at SP1 (soon to be upgraded to SP3).

My questions are:  Do the two slots have to be at the same size?  (as mentioned, I have a 2GB and a 521MB)   If they do not have to be at the same size, how do I get the system to recognized the 2.5GB RAM that I have?

Thanks.

You are limited by the specs for your computer. An easy way to check for the maximum size allowed and other requirements is to visit www.crucial.com.

Hello vinstone,

According to Dell's service manual for the Inspirion 9400 (Online Here) the memory modules must be of the same size and configuration. So the 512 will not be recognized by the system.

Peace.

Yes, I have seen other posts in this forum that discuss successfully using 4GB RAM on the same Dell model even though only 3.2GB is recognized.  However, that does not address my question.

Thank you.  That explains it.  I assume that also means 2GB stick and a 1GB stick will not work either.  Thanks again.

Your assumption is correct.

Glad to help.
