4 questions about Latitude D610 memory spec

I have a D610 that I am trying to get in shape for a sick friend. It has the stock DDR2 PC-4200 (2x) 512MB for a total of 1GB. Can I mix a 1GB stick with a 512MB stick for a total of 1.5GB DDR2 PC-4200 or must they be matched? If not, how bad is the performance hit?

Would the performance boost of the extra 512MB be dramatic or is it not worth it?

PC-5300 costs less, what are the advantages/disadvantages of using PC 5300?

thx

Then it's simple:  Put in 2x1GB.

If you haven't tried to optimize what is running or have and can't do more and/or just don't know specifically what is being used or what it needs, then you're just throwing RAM at the problem and hoping it helps, and 2GB is the most the D610 will take.

Specifically, I want it to perform as best as I can make it. I want to avoid the "This dam computer is slow." thing. :emotion-42:

They should match - performance will suffer slightly if not.  512MB probably won't do much (of course, this depends on many things) ... it would be better to simply put in 2x1GB.  Are you trying to "fix" some specific issue by adding RAM?

That's not specific.

Without any specifics, you'll probably find 512MB isn't enough to address that problem.

The problem Im throwing memory at is its a 2005 machine with only a Pentium 1.86GHz processor and 1GB of memory in it. Im just trying to get ol' Bessy to be the best she can be in general. You can never have too much memory (unless of course your OS cant see it).  A general tune up- reinstall OS, more memory, a new battery, a shampoo and rinse...

You can get second hand 2×1 GB modules for relatively cheap on the likes of eBay.

For this model, hardware so old its not worth investing much money.

In particular as the hard drive is IDE which are obsolete and no longer manufactured. The hard drive being the most likely component to fail.

Moreover this system runs Windows XP which will reach End of Life in April and you should be aware of the risks of continuing to run Windows XP.

While you could put Windows 7 32 Bit on it providing you get the RAM, the cost of the Windows license is more than the hardware is worth. Its certainly not worth the price of new RAM, a battery and a Windows upgrade.

When you have a non tech savvy friend dying from a terminal disease who has no computer, and wont be doing anymore than surfing, email and pictures, its a pretty good laptop. I just wish I had a better one in my paper weight/doorstop collection. The next one down is a C400! I have legit W7 volume licenses but it doesnt have enough memory for that OS, hence my original question. If I had the money, Id buy her an Inspiron 15, cheap enough, but I dont. Trying to do the best with what I have to do it with.

2x1GB ($30-40).

Windows 7 would be best (since you have access to legit W7 licenses, although you'll want to do a bit of homework to see if this model will even run Windows 7 - you could start with the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor (below)).  Windows 7x86 runs on 2GB just fine.

Or reinstall XP.  XP will no longer receive security and stability updates after the April cutoff and Microsoft Security Essentials will no longer protect it after July, so make sure she has a decent anti-virus (that WILL support XP beyond April - not all will) and that she (or you) backs up her important files regularly.
