The bottom line is that it's an unfortunate situation, but you took the 1-year warranty, and Dell honored your choice.
You have two options: pay to repair the system, or sell it for parts and replace it. If you choose the latter, I would VERY, VERY strongly urge you to purchase a 3-4 year warranty on it - whether you buy from Dell or another company. All notebooks are about the same hardware wise, and they're all expensive to repair when they fail.
I have the same problem. Same computer, same timing. My 600m simply stopped working about 13 months after I got it, just one month after warranty was gone. Bummer. Luckiliy for me, the thing still works a fourth of the time, its rather quirky. The rest of the time, when I hit the power button, a few lights turn on, and after a couple seconds they turn off again. I'm guessing its a motherboard problem. What I'd like to know is what caused it, and how it could be prevented if I were to buy a new motherboard. Some other problems I had shortly before this were that the volume up button and internal microphone stopped working. I thought it might be related as they and the power button are all located around the same area..
Maybe, I don't know, or I wouldn't know how to take advantage of it. I used a visa to pay with it, and as far as I know, visa does have some sort of warrenty policy on purchases...
But when I was asking for ideas, I was thinking more along the lines of what caused the problem and how it could be prevented.
Or you could try finding a cheap replacement motherboard to repair your machine with. Either way you will end up spending money to replace or repair it. Try ebay or www.parts-people.com
Cheap would be relative I guess... motherboards are around $400><
I just ordered a dell power button board (P/N DAOJM1YB6E6) for $20, hopefully my computer will work again by replacing that. It seems my problems have been isolated aroudn that area at least... and my computer DOES work intermittantly. If my motherboard went bad, wouldn't it not be able to run at all?
