My laptop's ethernet connection isn't working. When plugged in, the lights on the port are lit as normal, but the icon showing wireless connections is shown. Wifi still works but I prefer to use ethernet as wifi is sometimes slow. Ethernet still won't work when using a docking station and plugging the ethernet cable that way. The device manager says the driver is working properly and I downloaded a new driver from the Dell site and it still won't work.
Click the link below to choose your OS and then choose Wired Networking. The information will help resolve the networking issue using wired network. You may need to setup your wired network again.
Windows Network Diagnostics says both the Ethernet and Wifi adapters are experiencing problems. It doesn't elaborate on what kind of problems. When I select a Wifi network, it says there's limited connectivity. I usually don't use Wifi and believed that it would work but it's not. I am certain there's nothing wrong with my network.
I used to have this problem with my old 6400 on win XP.
I used to solve it by downloading new drivers, uninstalling all the drivers and associated software for managing the wireless networks, then rebooting & re-installing the drivers only, dont use the dell network manager if it installs bundled with the driver remove it from the program mannager & let windows use its built in network manager.
That always worked for me, seems to be a bug with the software/driver on windows xp.
You could uninstall the drivers and reinstall them to see if that will work better. You also may router and modem.
I had same problem. mine was I tried using an rj11 cable, regular phone connectors instead or rj45 Ethernet connectors. the rj11 will fit and seem ok, but trust me, as soon as I used correct connectors, ta da. just a thought.
